Dr. Afzal Javed from Pakistan
elected President Elect WPA

LONDON: Dr. Afzal Javed Consultant Psychiatrist from Pakistan settled in London has been elected President Elect of World Psychiatric Association. The election was held during WPA’s world congress held in Berlin on 10 October 2017.

The WPA is an association of national psychiatric societies aimed to increase knowledge and skills necessary for work in the field of mental health and the care for the mentally ill. Its member societies are presently 138, spanning 118 different countries and representing more than 250,000 psychiatrists. This is a singular & remarkable honour for a Pakistani psychiatrist for leading this international organization.

Dr. Afzal Javed graduated from King Edward Medical College Lahore, Pakistan and received higher specialised training in Psychiatry from Pakistan and UK (from Royal Edinburgh Hospital, University of Edinburgh and Institute of Psychiatry & Maudsley Hospital London).

His contributions to international psychiatry are evidenced by his long lasting experience for his work in many countries. It may be added that Dr Afzal Javed has served the Royal College of Psychiatrist (UK) as Associate Registrar, Chair of College Midlands Division, immediate past president of World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Executive Secretary for Scientific Sections of World Psychiatric Association and current President of Asian Federation of Psychiatric Associations.

His areas of special interest are Psychosocial Rehabilitation, Social and Transcultural Psychiatry and Psychiatric Research. His academic skills have been invaluable when publishing more than 110 scientific papers and being author of six books/monographs on different topics of psychiatry. He is currently involved in a number of projects on Schizophrenia and is completing audits in different clinical aspects of long term management of chronic mentally ill in the community. His involvement with Fountain House, Lahore adds value to his contributions in the field of national and international psychiatry.
