14th Surgical week for
Colorectal Diseases at JPMC

KARACHI: Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi is organizing its 14th annual surgical week for colorectal diseases from 14-17th October 2019. There will be live demonstrations by Master Trainer Yves Panis Prof. of Surgery from University of Paris, Beaujon Hospital France. Prof. Patrick Ronan O’Connell from University College Dublin Ireland will be the course coordinator while Prof. John Nicholls will be the visiting professor and it will be his third visit to Pakistan.

ICON 2020: Call
for Submissions

The Indus Health Network is pleased to invite submissions for its 5th Biennial conference in January 2020. We have teamed up with Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences, the highest Impact Factor medical journal in Pakistan, for a special supplement to ICON 2020. Our theme, “Building Bridges for Better Health Care” aims to highlight the multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Submissions reflecting the theme will be given preference. Both original articles and abstracts are welcome and must be formatted as per PJMS requirements. Sindh Healthcare 
Commission Imposes 
Fine, closes OPDs

Karachi: Sindh HealthCare Commission has fined Rs. Five lac on Darul Sehat Hospital located in Gulistan-e-Jauhar Karachi after the death of a girl child after allegedly wrong administration of an injection and also closed its OPDs. The Sindh Government is also reported to have asked for an enquiry to ascertain the qualifications and experience of hospital staff including paramedics and junior doctors.

Journals Committee

Islamabad: The newly appointed Council of Pakistan Medical & Dental Council headed by Prof. Tariq Iqbal Bhutta has reconstituted the PM&DC Journals Committee which will now be headed by Prof. Shabbir Lehri Principal Bolan Medical College from Baluchistan. The new members are as under:

The committee held its first meeting on April 15th chaired by Prof. Lehri. Dr. Umar Farooq and Dr.Shehla Baqi attended through video link. The application for renewal of seven journals was discussed and some of them were approved with observations while a few were also found to be highly deficient. Some journals were asked to reapply after fulfilling the necessary requirements.

Prof. Tariq Iqbal Bhutta also attended the meeting for a short time and promised to create a special section for Journals in the PM&DC. He also promised that a permanent focal person for this committee will be appointed and implementation of the decisions taken by the Journals Committee will be ensured. Prof. Shabbir Lehri announced that he will make sure that the quarterly meetings of the committee are held regularly by rotation in different provinces and workshops are organized for the professional capacity building of the editors of biomedical journals.


25th World Congress
on Medical Law in 
Tokyo in August 2019

Tokyo: World Association of Medical Law (WAML) is holding its 25th World Congress in Tokyo from 5-8th \August 2019. It is being hosted by one of the biggest and largest Japanese universities, WASEDA University seven of whose graduates later became prime Ministers of Japan. All those interested are welcome to attend says a communication received from Prof. Vugar Mammadov from Azerbaijan.

WAML, it may be mentioned here was established in 1967 in the University of Gent in Belgium with the following objectives:

  • To encourage the study and discussion of problems concerning medical law, bioethics and legal medicine, and their possible solution in ways that are beneficial to humanity;
  • To promote the study of the consequences of new developments in medicine and related sciences;
  • To address any matters that involve issues of medical and health law;
  • To provide political leadership and advocacy for the medical law professionals,
  • And to encourage research and development in medical law and related fields.
