Prof. Iqbal Khyani
conferred PhD in ENT

KARACHI: Prof. Dr. Iqbal Khyani from Dow Medical College has been conferred PhD degree on his original study Thesis titled “Early detection of oral cancer in saliva”. He is the first ENT Surgeon in Pakistan to have earned PhD in the field of ear, nose, throat and head and neck surgery. He did this research because oral cancers is increasing in Pakistan  and  alarming numbers of cancers are detected in younger age group due to increasing use of betel nut (Chalia), betel quid (Paan, Ghutka, Mawa, Manpuri).

Majority of our patient presents late at advance stage for diagnosis and treatment due to misconception. They seek advice from alternative healers under the influence of advice from friend and relative. As they present late to ENT surgeon, the results of the treatment are not good and there are chances of increased deformity, compromised quality of life and increased cost of treatment.

Prof. Dr. Iqbal Khyani did fellowship in Ear, Nose, Throat, Head & Neck Surgery (FCPS) from College of Physicians and Surgeons, in March 2000 and fellowship in Otorhinolaryngology (FRCS) from Royal College of Surgeons-Ireland, in April 2003. He had special training abroad in ear surgery (Otology) specially cochlear implant, Head & Neck Surgery for oral cavity, salivary glands and laryngeal cancer surgery and Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS), a latest treatment approach for chronic rhino sinusitis and nasal polyps. Presently he is working as Professor of ENT at Dow Medical College of Dow University of Health Sciences, Civil Hospital Karachi, Pakistan.

Pakistan Physiological Society
celebrates its 30th Birthday

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Physiological Society’s 30th Birthday was celebrated with Physiologists of Rawalpindi and Islamabad at Foundation University Medical College, Islamabad on 17th April 2017. The session started with the recitation of Holy Quran, followed by condolence message and prayer for the departed soul of late Professor Tariq Mahmood Alam.

This was followed by an open discussion forum where both undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum reforms including syllabus, assessments and core text books for BDS and allied health sciences etc were discussed. View points and experiences were shared among the representatives of University of Health Sciences, Isra University, Riphah University, National University of Medical Sciences, Shifa Tameer e Milat University and Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto University.  At the end of session, it was concluded that since medical education is heading towards integrated contextual curriculum, therefore it was strongly recommended that statutory bodies should be formally conveyed to include key necessities of integrated modular teaching (infrastructure and faculty) as a prerequisite for recognition and registration of Medical Colleges.
