Discovery of Genes linked
to developmental defects

Dr. Zaheer Asgahr Khan,

“British scientists say they have discovered 12 genes linked to developmental defects in the new-born, from heart defects to physical deformities, stunted growth, learning and behavior problems, seizures, autism, schizophrenia and other intellectual disabilities. These genes were found in a trawl of genomes of 1135 children with severe un-diagnosed disorders.

Welcome Trust Sangar Institute said it was the starting point in the search for new treatments and to understand why is it that some children get these disorders while others escape it and advise the parents of children who already have such defects. Most disabilities begin before birth but some can develop later, triggered by injury, infection, or environmental or other factors. However it has not yet been possible to find out what factors are responsible for causing these genetic defects.”
