Risk of new-onset T2D rises
with statin therapy

According to reports that research published in Diabetes Care suggests that “the risk of new-onset type 2 diabetes [T2D] rises with adherence to statin therapy, providing further confirmation of the previously reported link.” But, “the benefits of Statins still ‘clearly’ outweigh the risks, according to” the research.

NICE lowers threshold for
statin use amid controversy

National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) have lowered the threshold for people being offered statins to a 10% risk of developing cardiovascular disease in the next decade from 20% amid controversy. It is said that new guidelines lowering the threshold for statin use mean “forty per cent of adults,” or roughly “17.5 million people” will now be eligible for the drug in the UK.
Although NIC says the decision will “save lives,” critics have charged that those “drawing up the guidance” were “influenced by the pharmaceutical industry,” amid “wider arguments about ‘medicalising’ a nation and encouraging patients to take pills rather than change their unhealthy lifestyle.”

Sleeping in cooler bedrooms may
increase brown fat volume

“Well” blog reports that according to a study published online June 22 in the journal Diabetes, “cooler bedrooms could subtly transform a person’s stores of brown fat – what has lately come to be thought of as ‘good fat’ – and consequently alter energy expenditure and metabolic health, even into daylight hours.” For the study, National Institutes of Health-affiliated researchers asked “five healthy young male volunteers” to sleep in special climate controlled rooms there for a period of four months. The study found that “after four weeks of sleeping at 66 degrees, the men had almost doubled their volumes of brown fat.” Study senior author Francesco S. Celi, then of NIH and now at Virginia Commonwealth University, explained that it is indeed possible to “tweak your metabolic health by turning down the bedroom thermostat a few degrees.”

Fasting before lipid panel may
offer no clinical value

“Well” blog reported that while “the National Institutes of Health and other groups recommend fasting for nine to 12 hours before taking a blood lipid test,” research published online in Circulation offers “further evidence that fasting is probably unnecessary.”
It is reported that researchers who analyzed “data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey III (NHANES-III)” found “no significant difference between fasting and non-fasting LDL cholesterol levels when it came to predicting all-cause and cardiovascular mortality.” It has been pointed out that “many national and international guidelines for cholesterol management do recommend fasting blood draws, however, including the 2013 joint LDL cholesterol measurement recommendations of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association.”

Replacing Coal and Oil with Natural Gas
will not help fight Global Warming

Both shale gas and conventional natural gas have a larger greenhouse gas footprint than do coal or oil, especially for the primary uses of residential and commercial heating.
Dr. Robert Howarth, a professor of ecology and environmental biology, came to this conclusion after assessing the best available data and analyzing greenhouse gas footprints for both methane (including shale gas and conventional gas) and carbon dioxide over a timescale of 20-years following emissions. The findings are published in Energy Science & Engineering.
“While emissions of carbon dioxide are less from natural gas than from coal and oil, methane emissions are far greater. Methane is such a potent greenhouse gas that these emissions make natural gas a dangerous fuel from the standpoint of global warming over the next several decades,” said Dr. Howarth. “Society should wean ourselves from all fossil fuels and not rely on the myth that natural gas is an acceptable bridge fuel to a sustainable future.”(PR)
