World Heart Day celebrated
at Azra Naheed Medical College

LAHORE: World Heart Day is celebrated every year on 29th September to create awareness about the heart diseases in the Medical Profession and the General Public for prevention of Heart Diseases. Cardiovascular Diseases are the major cause of death worldwide directly and indirectly.

In Pakistan ischemic heart disease, hypertension and cerebrovascular diseases have reached the level of almost an epidemic due to our changed dietary habits, sedentary life style, lack of exercises and smoking. The prevalence of DM has also increased which is again a major risk factor of ischemic heart disease.

This year the theme of World Heart Day was "POWER YOUR LIFE". The Heart Day was celebrated on 28th September 2016 in the campus of Azra Naheed Medical College / Superior University starting with a walk, in which all the Medical Faculty and some of the University Professors and Staff participated. The walk was led by Prof. Dr. M. Akbar Chaudhry, Principal of Azra Naheed Medical College with the play cards and banners related to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. It was followed by a public awareness seminar where lectures were delivered on the epidemiology, risk factors and presentation of IHD / Heart Attacks by Prof. Muhammad Atif Qureshi, Dr. Nasir Iqbal and Prof. Dr. M. Akbar Chaudhry, followed by Question and Answer Session.

Prof. Akbar Chaudhry stressed on the need to control of modifiable risk factors and role of Aspirin in Primary and Secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases and recommended that the men above the age of 45 and women above the age of 55 with high risk must take 75mg aspirin daily to prevent myocardial infarction and strokes.
