NHSR meets at CPSP

KARACHI: A meeting of the Standing committee on National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination was held in the office of the President, College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPSP) at Karachi on May 09, 2015 under the Chairmanship of Mr. Khalid Hussain Magsi, MNA. The Agenda included, a comprehensive briefing of CPSP and to find solution being faced by the CPSP.

President CPSP briefed the Committee about the aims and objectives, national and international achievements of CPSP. In order to achieve its objectives, 20 members of the CPSP Council representing the Fellows of all the four provinces from several private and Army are elected for four years. The present Council was elected in April 2015 for the next 4 years representing over 20,000 specialists of the country. Currently 21,000 trainees are getting structural training programme.

The standing committee appreciated the performance of CPSP and recommended the formulation of a five members Committee comprising of CPSP representatives which will act as an Advisory body to the Federal Government on various health issues.

Medical Education conference
at CPSP Lahore

LAHORE: Future challenges in the field of medical education will be tackled with effective structured training programme. This was stated by Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry President of CPSP. He was speaking at the Medical Education Conference organized by CPSP on the Charter Day of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan which was attended by heads of institutions, senior professors, and a large number of fellows from across the country.

He requested the fellows to spend their capabilities for the betterment of training system. Addressing the gathering, Prof. Ijaz Ahsan, former President, CPSP, appreciated the efforts of CPSP at national and international levels and hoped that this institution will fulfill the requirements of specialist doctors in the country. Prof. Mahmood Ayaz, National Director for Residency Program put forward suggestions for the betterment of training system. Prof. Aamer Zaman Khan, Controller of Examinations, apprised the participants of the aims and objectives of medical education conference. Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal, Senior Vice President, CPSP, threw light on the amendments in monitoring system of CPSP. Prof. Hamid Mahmood Butt, Principal, SIMS, Prof. Muhammad Tayyab, and Prof. Syed Asghar Naqi gave suggestions for incorporating effective changes for the betterment of the examination system. On this occasion another seminar was also organized in which Maj. Gen. (Retd) Prof. Muhammad Aslam, VC, UHS, Lt. Gen. (Retd) Syed Afzaal Ahmed, Principal, CMH Medical College, Prof. Mahmood Shaukat, Principal, Allama Iqbal Medical College, Prof. Zahid Kamal, Prof. Javed Raza Gardezi, Maj. Gen. Sohail Hafeez and Prof. Abrar Ashraf Ali participated and responded to the questions from the audience.. Later on a strategy was formulated for bringing betterment in medical education in consultation.

 CPSP celebrates
Charter Day

LAHORE: The Charter Day celebrations of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan were commemorated at its Regional Center, Lahore from 18th to 19th May. On this occasion a symposia was organized on 18th May, 2015 on Medicine, Surgery and Family Medicine which was attended by heads of institutions, senior professors, and a large number of fellows from across the country. International training courses were also conducted on this occasion, attended by medical experts from the province of Punjab.

Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal, Senior Vice President, CPSP, briefed Advisor Health, Punjab, Khawaja Salman Rafique, Secretary Health Punjab, Jawaad Rafique Malik and D. G. Health, Dr. Zahid Peraiz and proposed for the provision of specialists at District and Tehsil level. The briefing was attended by Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry, President, CPSP, and some council members. Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry, President, CPSP, thanked the Government of Punjab and said that international courses will be conducted throughout the country and it will be mandatory for all trainees to attend these courses before appearing in the examinations. Addressing to the participants of symposia Khawaja Salman Rafique said CPSP is a symbol of pride for the nation and we are proud of it. He assured that their recommendations will be forwarded to the Chief Minister of Punjab for the allocation of land for CPSP. On this occasion Secretary Health, Jawaad Rafique Malik extended a proposal to the President, CPSP, for the provision of specialists at District and Tehsil level. He also requested to provide specialist doctors in such disciplines which are lacking including Anaesthesiology. (PR)

 PAME-JPMA Workshop on
“Statistical Reviewing of Manuscript

KARACHI: Pakistan Association of Medical Editors in collaboration with Journal of Pakistan Medical Association (JPMA) organized a workshop on “Statistical Reviewing of Manuscript” on 4th April 2015 at PMA House.  Around 25 doctors, undergraduate and post graduate students from various institutes and universities attended.  The objectives of the workshop were to look at fundamentals statistical considerations while reviewing a manuscript.  Mehwish Hussain a senior lecturer of Biostatistics at Dow University of Health Sciences was the facilitator. She is also one the statistical reviewer at JPMA.    

The facilitator highlighted different approaches for academic and statistical review.  She further elaborated all the steps needed to be considered in statistical analysis of a manuscript by the reviewers. The topics included process of data collection, sample size estimation and calculation, Description and application of various statistical tests, results interpretation and data presentation. The workshop was highly appreciated by the participants. Dr. Fatema Jawad, Editor-in-Chief of JPMA and President PAME concluded the session by thanking the facilitator and the participants.  Certificates were handed out to the attendees at the end.(PR)

 Guidelines on Medical
Uses of Aspirin

PESHAWAR: In order to create awareness about the latest revised guidelines on Medical Uses of Aspirin by Pakistan Aspirin Foundation, some meetings were held in different hospitals in Khyber PK which were well attended.

The first such meeting was held at Hayatabad Medical Complex headed by Dr.Farhat Abbas Assoc. Professor of Cardiology and over two dozen doctors participated. The second meeting was organized at Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar headed by Dr.Adnan Gul Asst.Professor of Cardiology here again it was attended by faculty members, postgraduates and House Officers.  The third meeting in this series was organized at Mardan Medical Complex headed by Dr.Mushtaq Ahmed Head of Cardiology department. All the participants appreciated this academic activity under the auspicious of Pakistan Aspirin Foundation which will go a long way in promoting the use of Aspirin in its well established indications.
