Pre-conference Ilizarov workshop
organized at Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Department of Orthopedics Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar organized a two day Pre-Orthocon Ilizarov workshop 2013 on 21st and 22nd November. Dr Haroon-ur-Rashid from Aga Khan University was the course director and Dr. Sikander Hayat from Peshawar was the course coordinator. Dr. Yasser Elbatrawy from Egypt was invited as an International faculty. Other course faculty included various consultant orthopedic surgeons from all over Pakistan.

The workshop was intended to train senior orthopedic residents and junior orthopedic surgeons. Twenty three participants attended the workshop. There were 5 ORPs who were also trained simultaneously. Dedicated lectures were delivered by faculty. There were number of hands on workshops for application of Ilizarov using saw bones and rings. All workshops were preceded by a video demonstration. One to one interaction of faculty and participant was made sure.

The course covered various aspects of Ilizarov technique and its application in complex orthopedic problems. It consisted of identification of the implants, principles of fracture fixation with Ilizarov fixator, principles of deformity correction and principles of treatment of bone infection. All the material for the workshop was arranged locally. Saw bones and implants were obtained from local vendors. Ilizarov instruments were provided by Dr. Haroon-ur-Rashid. The workshop was sponsored by the organizers of Pak International Orthocon 2013. At the end of the course written feedback from participants was very encouraging.(PR)

CPSP get ATLS Award

LAHORE: College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) has completed five successful years for ATLS/ACLS courses. CPSP is the first medical institution in SARRC Region and the only institution conducting the ATLS/ACLS courses for healthcare professionals in public as well private health sector besides the HCPs in armed forces.
Prof. John Cout Bie Chairman of International ATLS course awarded the shield to Prof Mehmood Ayyaz who is country director of ATLS course in Pakistan at a meeting held in Washington recently. The ATLS/ ACLS course, it may be mentioned here, was started with the efforts of President CPSP Prof. Zafar ullah Chauhdry in 2007 in Pakistan. (PR)
