Annual Research Day at Hamdard
College of Medicine and Dentistry

KARACHI: Keeping up its past traditions, Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry, Hamdard University organized its Annual Research Day to promote research culture among the students and faculty members on October 28, 2015.

Fourth year students of medical college presented their research on different topics.  According to the judge’s decision, the first prize went to the presentation titled “A Study of presence of Bacterial pathogens in poultry chicken in different areas of Karachi” by a group of students led by Muhammad Osama, second prize went to the presentation titled “Musculo Skeletal Disorders Among Medical Students of Hamdard University Karachi, Pakistan” by another group led by Tayaba Shahid Khan,and the third prize went to the research on “Assessment of Health Status and Occupational Safety measures among Coal mine Workers in Shahrug, Baluchistan” by a student group led by Iqra Shaukat. Special prize was given to the research titled “Disorders of Upper Extremities Associated with prolonged use of Smartphones” by a group led by Hafsa Qureshi.

The remaining topics of presentations were Health Hazards Among Spray Painters Working in Automobile Garages In Karachi,Frequency of drug addiction among long route drivers, A comparative study between Spinal & General anaesthesia for Open Cholecystectomy, Health Issues among Female Prisoners In Karachi, Knowledge, Attitude and Practices for Blood Donation Among People of KarachiandObesity and Physical activity levels among professional college students in Karachi, Pakistan.

The panel of judges comprised Dr. Fatema Jawad, Chief Editor of JPMA, Professor Dr. Sina Aziz, Chief Editor,Annals of Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and Karachi Medical & Dental College, Professor Dr. Seema Mumtaz, Chairperson of Community Health Sciences of United Medical College, and Professor Dr. Imran Sheikh, Chairperson, Department of Community Health Sciences at Bahria Medical & Dental College.

Ms.Sadia Rashid, Chief Guest and Chancellor of Hamdard University gave away the prizes to the winners and mementos to judges and the supervisors of the research groups on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Dr. Hakeem Abdul Hannan, Vice Chancellor, and Hamdard University said that the founder of the university, Shaheed Hakim Mohammad Said always emphasized on research work and believed that Hamdard University should create new knowledge and that research can only nurture the soul of any academic university.  He commended the academic activities by the Community Health Sciences department led by Prof. Dr. Syed Muhammad Mubeen for promoting research culture and encouraging students of HCM&D to take up research projects.He said, universities were always recognized by their research work and this year newer and unique topic of researches were presented by the students.

Earlier, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Javed, Dean, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences in his welcome address commended the efforts being made by Prof. Dr. Syed Muhammad Mubeen and his team.  He highlighted the importance of research and said that we should think critically why the polio menace was not being eliminated from Pakistan while the whole world had eliminated this. The whole world had done a lot of research on the virus of polio and succeeded to control this threat.   All the judges also spoke and gave their comments on this occasion.

The programme ended with the vote of thanks by Prof. Dr. Muhammad Furqan, Principal, and Hamdard College of Medicine & Dentistry. (PR)
