Insulin pumps can change lives
of people with diabetes

KARACHI: M/s Medworks launched its insulin pump (Insulauto) and mobile based glucometer (Glu-Sage) at a meeting held recently. Medworks is digital healthcare startup centered on the management of diabetes. Medworks is the first company to develop smart-phone compatible glucose testing system in Pakistan.

Glu-Sage is 1.6 inch device which plugs into the phone’s headphone jack and smart phone turns into glucometer. It is currently available for Android smartphones. It also possess an application which can be download free from play store. By using the Medworks application, users can view, save and share their glucose readings with their doctors and relatives immediately. It also provide data security as well as complete logs which can be very beneficial in the management of diabetes.Faisal Masood (CEO – Medworks) welcoming the participants stated that the goal of the organization is to empower patients to use data in order to improve their own health outcomes and remain connected to their doctors.

Dr. Abdul Basit President MENA region of IDF shared Statistics of Second National Diabetes Survey of Pakistan (2016-17) which revealed that one in every 4th Pakistani has diabetes over the age of 20. He also highlighted that the biggest hurdle in achieving good glycemic control is lack of self-monitoring of blood glucose. High blood glucose levels are major contributors to mortality and morbidity. He also spoke about the importance of self-monitoring blood glucose, and how digital tools like Glu-Sage can be initiation of a new era in self-management of Diabetes.

Ms. Erum Ghafoor, Consultant Diabetes Educator, Public Health Expert speaking at the occasion stated that this is the first ever low cost pump in Pakistan. She highlighted its features and advantages of insulin pump. She also mentioned that insulin pump can be used in people with type 1, type 2 and women with gestational diabetes. She discussed in detail as to how insulin pumps can change lives of people with diabetes and bring ease and flexibility. She also shared her own experience on using self-monitoring devices (Glu-sage) and insulin pumps (Insulauto).
