APA and PPS to collaborate
in training and education

NEW YORK: During the recently held Annual Meeting of American Psychiatric Association (APA), New York 3nd-7th May, 2014, the leadership of APA and Pakistan Psychiatric Society (PPS) met on 6th May, to discuss issues of mutual interest and future collaboration in areas of training, medical education and research in the field of Psychiatry.

American Psychiatric Association APA was represented by Dr Paul Summergrad, President Elect APA, Dr Saul Levin, APA CEO and Medical Director and Ricardo A Juarez, Associate Director, International Affairs APA. Pakistan Psychiatric Society team was headed by Prof. Mazhar Malik, President PPS, Dr Naeem Laghari,Vice President,Prof.Imtiaz Dogar,Punjab Provincial Secretary, Dr Wajid Ali AKhunzada,KPK Provincial Secretary ,Dr Majid Ali Abldi and Dr Mian Iftikhar Executive Members PPS. Dr Zafar Ehsan, President Psychiatrist Association of Pakistanis of North America, PAPANA was also present.
After detailed deliberation future collaboration areas were identified. The training of Fellows in psychiatry from Pakistan, in fields of Child Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Substance Abuse and Social and Rehabilitation Psychiatry, were identified as priority sub specialties. Pakistan Psychiatric Society will encourage its members to acquire APA International Membership and participate in the academic meetings and conferences of APA on regular basis. In the field of Medical Education at under-graduate level teaching the APA Medical Education Committee will be approached for guidance in developing Standardized and Structured Curriculum for Behavioural Sciences subject. The future collaboration will be based on mutual respect and common interests. (PR)


DUHS holds its
5th Convocation

KARACHI: Sindh Health Minister Dr. Sagheer Ahmed was the Chief Guest at the 5th Convocation of Dow University of Health Sciences held at its Ojhs Campus on Sunday May 11th201. A large number of position holders in various disciplines, best graduates were honoured with the presentation of Gold Medals, Shields and Certificates by the Chief Guest on this occasion. Earlier Prof. Masood Hameed Khan, Vice-Chancellor-DUHS in his welcome address recounted the progress and development works at the University since its inception. Since its establishment the University he said, has produced 7382 undergraduates and 1190 postgraduate students in all specialty of medical and allied sciences.Others who spoke on the occasion included, Prof. M. Actively participates
in PSA Conference

KARACHI: M/s Hospital Supply Corporation actively participated in 34th Annual conference of Pakistan Society of Anesthesiologists and Pakistan Society of Critical Care held at a local hotel in Karachi from 26th-27th of April 2014. The aim of this conference was to discuss recent advancements and research in the field of anesthesia. Prof. Tipu Sultan inaugurated the conference and talked about the role of anesthetist’s besides recent advances made in this field.
In the Focus Session, chaired by Prof. Gauhar Afshan, Prof. Sadqa Aftab covered the topic of “Thromboelastography: Recent advancements in coagulation monitoring”. (TEG-system provides visual representation of patients hemostatis and provides a wealth of information beyond traditional, plasma-based assays)was presented by Dr Farjad Sultan which aroused lot of interest among the participants with the emphasis that “this technology should be the part of every hospital”
Day-II started with a breakfast session sponsored by Hospital Supply Corporation during which different topics were discussed by leading anesthetists, free papers and posters were presented, – Multi-Disciplinary Practices and Monitoring Related Critical Incidents were discussed in detail and the conference ended with souvenirs and prize distribution.(PR)
