KARACHI: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) has a long history and is the established tool in supporting professionals as lifelong learners. It owns the responsibility for keeping experts updated with the advancement in knowledge, skills and practice styles for productive outcomes. The Aga Khan University recognizes a commitment to create opportunities for lifelong learning for physicians and other health professionals of Pakistan and other countries.

The Aga Khan University hospital is accredited by the American Association of Continuing Medical Education (AACME) USA for its quality and standards. Continuous Medical education is the only way to maintain international standards.

Continuing Medical & Professional Education is considered by the stakeholders as an integral part of the teaching program of the University and of the teaching responsibilities of the faculty. The need for continuing learning and being current in a specialist’s career is of the most significance. Continuing Professional Development is a vital mode for medical and allied experts to achieve professional standards and one of the sources of getting updates in the field required for evaluation and revalidation.

The department of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) at the Aga Khan University (AKU) has now built its recognition and has established support through extensive collaboration across different entities and disciplines within the varsity. The department of Continuing and Professional Education (CPE) has been able to deliver quality and distinct Continuing Medical Education (CMEs) by strictly adhering to the policies and standards reclined by American Association of Continuing Medical Education (AACME). The department has been successful in getting certified by AACME as a provider for Continuing Medical Education for Physicians and Allied Health Professionals for the year 2013-14. In recognition of the tedious efforts of Dr. Jafri the AACME body has presented him distinguished award for International Leadership in the implementation of AACME Standards and Policies. These recognition certificates are in itself a success story of the department working to achieve the vision and mission of the university to provide professional education at its par.

The Department of Continuing and Professional Education at AKU is still in infancy phase but with the continuous support and joint efforts with the other sections at the varsity in due time course it will be the winner in the region as a core accrediting body.

In the year 2013 and 14, more than 500 Continuing Medical and Professional Education activities like seminars, guest lectures, workshops etc., were formally provided by DCPE, considering the rationale, needs assessment, intended learning outcomes, content, financial disclosure and academic precision of a CME. These continuing education activities benefited approximately 9000 physicians and were held successfully embracing the international standards. (PR)
