Admission to Medical and Dental Colleges
Students who qualify should have
the choice to get admission to
any institution - Prof. A.J. Khan

MUZAFFARABAD: (AZAD JAMMU & KASHMIR). Students who qualify for admission to medical and dental colleges as per the government policy should then have the right to get admission to the institutions of their choice. Restricting the students to get admission in their own provinces is not in the national interest but if they get admission to institutions in other provinces, it will promote national integration. This was stated by Prof. A.J. Khan former Director General Health and former President of Pakistan Medical & Dental Council. He was speaking at the conference dinner of Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine (PSIM) Midsummer meeting held here from September 3rd to September 5th 2020.

Prof. A.J. Khan FRCP

He was the chief guest at the dinner hosted for the delegates and participants of PSIM Mid-Summer conference on September 4th 2020. He was very critical of the present admission policy. He was of the view that forcing the students to get admission to provincial institutions was neither in the interest of medical education nor in the interests of institutions. In the past good institutions with experienced faculty used to attract good students and they became good doctors. If an institution is forced to admit students with poor academic record, how they can train them as good competent doctors. If open admission policy is practiced, it will also force the medical and dental colleges in private sector to improve their standards and provide adequate teaching and training facilities so that they can attract good students.

Prof. A.J. Khan commended the accomplishments of PSIM in such a short span of time and hoped that they will continue their academic activities to educate the healthcare professionals building their professional capacities particularly the younger generation of doctors. Such conferences provide an excellent opportunity for learning from colleagues. Holding the conference in such a place far away from major cities was also commendable.

Prof. A.J. Khan it may be mentioned here was Principal of Bolan Medical College and then he was appointed as the Founder Principal of Ayub Medical College which was completed in a record time under his guidance. Later he established his own Frontier Medical & Dental College in Abbottabad in the private sector.

Earlier Prof. Javed Akram President of PSIM who is also Vice Chancellor of University of Health Sciences welcomed the chief guest and the participants to the conference and paid rich tributes to the contributions made by Prof. A.J. Khan as DG Health, President of PM&DC as well as having served as Principal of various medical colleges in public and private sector. He was also presented a memento on behalf of PSIM. Gifts were also presented to a select group of guests attending the conference.
