From our correspondent

MUZAFFARABAD (AJK): We all must have tall ambitions. We have a very young population and if we all work with devotion, we are capable of becoming one of the Top-Ten economies of the World and join the developed Nations. We enjoy a unique position among the Muslim countries and particularly in the region. We must have targets to achieve which are not difficult. This was stated by Sardar Masood Ahmad Khan President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir while speaking in the concluding session of Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine (PSIM) Mid-Summer meeting held here from September 3rd to September 5th 2020.

Sardar Masood Ahmad further stated that now there are three medical colleges in AJK in both public and private sector. About four hundred students have graduated and their number is increasing every year. In the past we had no medical colleges in AJK. We have good health infrastructure and we are doing good as compared to Pakistan as our health indicators are better. There are some pockets of prosperity but the prevalence of chronic diseases like diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and cancer is increasing. We have to rise to the occasion to meet these challenges for which we need good reliable health system. He advised the healthcare professionals present on the occasion to listen to themselves. We are still short of sophisticated state of the art equipment in our hospitals. Availability of modern diagnostic and therapeutic techniques is lacking. Government is giving priority to development in healthcare. Majorities of the medical students these days in every medical college, he remarked, were girls but let us remember that girls alone cannot do all this. Boys will also have to intensify their efforts and play their vital role. They must improve their performance and excel in looking after the healthcare of the community.

conference held at Muzaffarabad from September 3rd to September5th, 2020.

During the last few years, Sardar Masood Ahmad said we have seen lot of developments and innovations in medical services. We have seen the Robots doing surgery and artificial intelligence was being extensively used. Addressing the participants, President of AJK said you have a critical mass. Since we have a large middle class, we have the potential. He commended the humanitarian efforts which PSIM has made. Leadership of the Nation must communicate with the world leaders about the worst health crisis which the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir were facing. You too can raise your voice and urge the healthcare professionals of the world to speak for the cause of Kashmir. Since the occupation forces are now using pellets while firing on them, more than fifteen hundred people have become blind or partially lost their eye sight in recent years. According to reports about 45% of the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir are suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders (PTSD). The world will pay attention to the cause of Kashmir when we in Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir as a Nation will stand up together and rise to create an international movement in the field of health. You can also contact International Red Cross and other similar organizations for help and assistance, he added.

Earlier Prof. Javed Akram President of PSIM in his speech said that we must discuss why this conflict is going on for so many decades and why the United Nations has failed to resolve this dispute. We must also look into how we as a Nation behave. We have a great potential having a younger generation. He also announced to provide four scholarships to the students from AJK to specialize in Telemedicine at UHS. He also assured to look into the possibility of sponsoring the tuition fee of some of the students from AJK for their studies in Pakistan to help the deserving students. He urged the President of AJK to use his good offices to ensure that those students who have got admission in Pakistan medical colleges from occupied Jammu and Kashmir are allowed to join their institutions and continue their studies as at present the Indian government was not permitting them to go to Pakistan.
