LAHORE: It was indeed a rare occasion on August 28th 2018 when three Vice Chancellors, Prof. Javed Akram Vice Chancellor University of Health Sciences, Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal Vice Chancellor King Edward Medical University and Prof. Amar Zaman Khan Vice Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Medical University jointly chaired a meeting held at University of Health Sciences Lahore. Prof. Mahmood Ali Malik one of the senior most physicians, former Principal of AIMC and King Edward Medical College graced the occasion as Chief Guest. It was the formal launching ceremony of a book “Scientific Writing: A Guide to the Art of Medical Writing and Scientific Publishing” authored by Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid Chief Editor Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences and Pulse International who is also Secretary of Eastern Mediterranean Association of Medical Editors (EMAME) and Dr. Masood Jawaid Consultant General Surgeon and medical educationist. The meeting was also attended by some Principals and faculty members of various medical institutions from Lahore besides faculty members and postgraduates of UHS.

All the speakers paid tributes and commended the contributions of Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid to promote the art of Medical Writing and Scientific Publishing in Pakistan as well as in the Region. Incidentally this was his twenty third book which contains useful information not only for the medical students, postgraduates but also young researchers, faculty members, reviewers as well as editors of medical journals. Prof. Mahmood Ali Malik termed him as a symbol of medical journalism in Pakistan. Despite the fact that he is not a medical graduate but he has contributed a lot to medicine, medical education and improvement of patient care in numerous ways for which he enjoys tremendous respect among the medical profession. The book guides the readers in detail how to write different manuscripts i.e. original article, reviews, case reports, special communications and letters in a proper way. Every member of the medical profession, he opined, will find this book extremely useful and highly informative.

Prof. Khalid Masood Gondal in his speech on the occasion said that Scientific Writing was one of the best books on the subject of medical writing and scientific publishing. It covers a very wide variety of topics which the readers will find extremely informative and useful in planning, conducting research and writing manuscripts. Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid is a man of principles and we always welcome his constructive criticism and suggestions which are all aimed at improving the teaching, training, patient care and medical education. The Editors of the book, Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid and Dr. Masood Jawaid have tried to help the readers benefit from collective wisdom of a large number of editors and research scientists who have contributed on different topics in the book which is a rich treasure. Research is an integral part of the universities and this book will be very useful for the researchers. Apart from medical writing, it also covers issues like scientific misconduct and predatory journals and how to avoid getting trapped by them. It also tells us how to write obituary notes and conference proceedings besides many other things, he added.

Prof. Amar Zaman Khan speaking at the occasion thanked the Editors of the book Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid and Dr. Masood Jawaid for compiling and editing such a wonderful book which the members of the medical profession will find extremely useful. One of the chapters which I particularly want to highlight, he said, was how to write research protocols for seeking grants which will be of immense benefit as researchers often find it difficult to write research proposals and do not know the sources of funding available. Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid has all along been promoting the cause of Medical Journalism now for over fifty years besides highlighting the importance of professional ethics. Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid has authored twenty three books besides over seventy papers while Dr. Masood Jawaid has over one hundred papers to his credit. Dr. Masood Jawaid being a general surgeon and medical educationist has also contributed a great deal to medical education and both of them have conducted hundreds of workshops all over the country and overseas. They enjoy respect in the medical profession and we all recognize their contributions, he remarked.

Earlier Prof. Javed Akram in his introductory remarks commended the contributions of Mr. Shaukat Jawaid and Dr. Masood Jawaid. He further stated that it was also a very happy occasion that these days all the Vice Chancellors of medical universities in Lahore are working as brothers and as a team. Though media in general has often run a malicious campaign against the medical profession and healthcare facilities but Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid is known for his constructive criticism which has always been welcomed by the medical profession. We are lucky that someone like Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid is monitoring the profession and keeps an eye on our functioning. He has also promoted the cause of medical journalism and professional ethics and keeps on reminding the medical profession to uphold professional ethics. We do need to draw a line and need to learn from him, he added.

Prof. Javed Akram also gave details of the National Conference on medical journalism which the UHS is organizing from January 18-20th in 2019 for which a few foreign guest speakers are also being invited. An organizing committee has been constituted which includes Vice Chancellors of medical universities, senior faculty members and distinguished editors of medical journals. Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid is the Chairman of the Scientific Committee and an interesting scientific programme is being prepared to enlighten the participants on different aspects of medical journalism, the problems which are faced by the editors. Through dialogue, discussions an effort will be made to find some indigenous solutions to these problems by sharing the knowledge and experience of various editors and distinguished researchers.

UHS is also planning to start a Master’s Programme in Medical Journalism for which Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid is preparing a concept paper. An experts committee consisting of senior medical editors and educationists is being formed to design the curriculum and suggest measures for assessment.
