campus in next two months-Akhtar Munir Gandapur

99% pass percentage in the last final Professional Examination
reflects the devotion and dedication of the faculty and
standard of education at this young medical institution

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Gomal Medical College is planning to shift to its new campus spread over an area of four hundred canals built at a cost of Rs.2.5 Billion. Though most of the construction work has been completed and the final completion date is June 2018 but since we are facing lot of difficulties at the present campus, we have decided to move to the new campus which is located at a distance of about seven KMs from the city in the next two months. The college enrolls one hundred students and 99% pass percentage in the last final year examination (one student did not appear in the exam) of the Khyber Medical University reflects the devotion and dedication of the teaching faculty and high standard of medical education at this young medical institution. This was stated by Prof. Akhtar Munir Gandapur Principal of Gomal Medical College while talking to Pulse International on August 23rd 2017.

The college, it may be mentioned here was established in 1998. As per the health reforms introduced by the Government of Khyber PK, Prof. Akhtar Munir Gandapur said we have become a Medical Teaching Institution with an autonomous status though we have not yet got the full autonomy. Our Board of Governors is not yet complete as the health system is not yet fully established. Asked about the teaching faculty, Prof. Akhtar Munir  Gandapur said that we have most of the teaching staff as per requirements of Pakistan Medical & Dental Council. We have conducted interviews for some Senior Registrars and a few posts of Assistant Professors are also vacant which will be filled soon. Construction of the new Campus of Gomal Medical College had started in 2006 and is now in final stages of completion.

Continuing Prof. Akhtar Munir  Gandapur said that we have two affiliated teaching hospitals with Gomal Medical College.  The local DHQ Hospital has five hundred beds with all the specialties while Mufti Mahmod Teaching Hospital has got three hundred beds.  Dera Ismail Khan Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy (DINAR) is the third hospital which is being used for teaching and training purposes. To begin with the college was allowed to admit only fifty students but now our annual enrolment is one hundred students and the ratio of boys and girls is almost 50/50. Currently there are nine medical colleges and three dental colleges in public and private sector in the province.  At Gomal Medical College sixty two seats are on open merit while twelve seats are reserved for self finance students for local candidates and two for overseas students. Ten seats are reserved for FATA, five seats each for FATA Baluchistan and AJK while one seat is for Afghan Nationals.

AT the new Campus of GMC, the administrative block has Dean’s Office, Principal’s Office, and Director Administration, offices of Medical Director, Postgraduate Dean, Associate Dean for Postgraduate studies and Associate Dean for undergraduate studies. At new campus we have a huge digital library, Skills Labs is currently under construction which is being built at a cost of fifteen crore of rupees. We have forty postgraduates under training. New campus has six lecture halls and three Examination halls which are all located in a separate campus. We also have a huge State of the Art Mortuary with all the facilities for training in Forensic Medicine. An animal house for postgraduate studies is also provided at the new campus while the Auditorium at the new Campus has seating capacity for one thousand people.

Responding to a question regarding academic activities Prof. Akhtar Munir Gandapur said that we have regular CME programmes; our last annual symposium was on colorectal cancer in which we had speakers from all over the country. Oncologists’ were also involved. The new campus also houses a beautiful Mosque for students and staff. A cafeteria has also been provided for the student and the staff. The new campus also has a Residential colony which has eighty Bungalows for teaching faculty and lower staff. We have three students’ hostels with a capacity to accommodate one hundred twenty students in each while another student’s hostel is planned.  Two Tennis Courts have also been provided for the students. We have our own Guest House which has well furnished fourteen rooms which are used to accommodate the visiting faculty members and examiners. Gomal Medical Journal was started in 2002 and now a Medical Students Journal is also planned. We regularly organize Sports Day, Students literary society is very active and so is the case with the Pathology Society. We organize Clinico Pathological Conferences regularly. Research and Development Cell has been established and the students are now given Community Research Projects as a part of their training. Prof. Iftikhar Ahmad is Head of the Dept. of Community Medicine. The college has made tremendous progress ever since its inception; we do have some problems which are being sorted out. We have ambitious development projects which will be implemented in a phased programme in the years to come Prof. Akhtar Munir  Gandapur stated.

Accident and Emergency Center located at the newly constructed Emergency was formally inaugurated on January 6, 2017. It caters to trauma cases from the whole region including the federally administered areas adjacent to Dera Ismail Khan. This Center has advanced facilities to deal with emergencies. It is staffed with well trained and qualified surgeons and nursing staff. It has a 10-Bed resuscitation unit, two operation theaters, a laboratory, blood bank, radiology department and separate wards for male and female students.

Gomal Medical College publishes its Newsletter regularly which highlights the social and academic activities taking place at the college. World TB Day was celebrated at the college. A seminar on tuberculosis was organized by the Dept. of Medicine in collaboration with the Dept. of Obstetrics & Gynaecology. The objective was to create awareness about the disease in the community and the healthcare professionals.  Speakers at the seminar talked about the prevalence of the disease in the community and stressed the importance of early diagnosis and treatment. World Thallasemia Day was also celebrated on May 9th 2017. Dept. of Forensic Medicine organized a Forensic Poster Competition which was actively participated by the students. The posters were judged by Prof. Jehanzeb along with Prof. Iftikhar Ahmad Head of the Community Medicine Department. Other academic activities included Workshops on CML and Early Breast Cancer. College also organized a Book Fair in collaboration with National Book Foundation which provided an opportunity to the faculty and students to buy medical books at concessional price.

HAYAN is the student’s magazine which is published by Gomal Medical College annually. It contains literature, arts, and different stories to poems in Urdu, Pashto and English.
