KARACHI: Pricking of infusion bottle is still very common practice in our healthcare facilities. It is chronic habit which will take time to change. Healthcare professionals including nurses and paramedics needs to be constantly reminded to follow standard operating procedures to avoid complications. This was stated Dr. Naveed Ali Khan, Assistant Professor ofSurgery, Dow University of Health Sciences & Civil Hospital Karachi.He was performing the Otsuka Lucky draw in connection with Otsuka awareness campaign against Hepatitis spread, at a meeting held at Otsuka Head office on September 22, 2015. Mr. Hanif Sattar Chief Executive Officer of Otsuka Pakistan, Mr. Habib Navaid Senior Director Marketing, Mr. Khalid Munir Business Unit Head, Dr. Talha Senior Medical Advisor, Mr. Muhammad Ashraf RSM Mr. Moinuddin and some other senior executives from Otsuka were also present on this occasion.

Continuing Dr. Naveed said that Nurses and paramedics in particular need to be reminded again and again about the safe practices regarding the use of Intravenous Infusions so that it becomes a routine practice. Maximum efforts should be made to create awareness for nurses and it should be a continuous activity because especially in public sector hospitals different batches of students nurses come and go and have no knowledge about it, there education level is also low as compared to Private hospitals.Principal of nursing schools should also be involved in this campaign, he added.

Dr. Naveed further stated that hospital infectious control, sharpb in,yellow bin concept is lacking in our hospitals. No prick policy should be adopted besides provision of quality products for which technical committees of the hospitals should be approached.Media can play an important role for dissemination of knowledge and to create awareness in public. Dr. Naveed further said that it is the duty of the senior faculty members to share their knowledge and experience with others so that the younger generation of doctors, nurses and paramedics are better prepared to effectively manage the patients which will go a long way in improving patient care. Talking about fluid therapy Dr. Naveed said that every patient has different requirement. After surgery over hydration can also cause complication. Majority of doctors especially postgraduates are not aware of proper fluid therapy for which special attention is needed. He also appreciated the contribution of Otsuka Pakistan in helping the healthcare professionals in various ways and their efforts should be acknowledged, he added.

Earlier Mr. Moinnuddin, Product Manager of Otsuka Pakistan highlighted the activities of Otsuka Pakistan to create awareness about Hepatitis spread, needle stick injuries and pricking of IV infusion preparations by using electronic and print media among the public and healthcare professionals. Various hospitals, Mr. Moin stated has made it part of their policy to strictly implement do not prick IV infusion bottles. Otsuka has also made available fluids which do not require mixing but these products will reach to patients only if they are prescribed by generic name, he added.Dr. Mumtaz Begum from Wapda Hospital Sukkur was the lucky winner for the month of September 2015.
