authored by Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid and Dr.Masood Jawaid to Prof. Tariq Rafi VC and Prof.
Lubna Baig Pro VC of Jinnah Sindh Medical University at a meeting held at JSMU on
November 10th, 2018 in connection with Maqbool Jafary Training Course for Junior Editors.

Speaking at the occasion Prof. Tariq Rafi appreciated this initiative taken by Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences for training of junior editors in the name of late Dr. Maqbool H. Jafary who, he said ,was a well-known physician and an eminent medical personality. Prof. Tariq Rafi also recalled that when he was under training for Fellowship, his teacher Prof. S.H. Zaidi used to encourage us all. He was very much interested in research, ethics and medical education even in those days. It was he who asked us to present papers at ENT Conferences. Prior to this only senior professors used to make presentations. That is how he introduced this trend of encouraging the juniors. Currently most faculty members, Prof.Tariq Rafi stated were just interested in writing “promotion papers” and once they become Professor, they stop reading and writing what to talk of doing any research. It is also a fact that most often seniors do not write but force their juniors to add their name as one of the authors on papers in which they have made no or very little contribution. Many journals, he said, also publish papers within days and weeks by taking money without any peer review system. Pakistan Medical & Dental Council, Prof. Tariq Rafi suggested should also categorize the medical journals based on their standard just like the Higher Education Commission which has put medical journals with Impact Factor in the highest category.

Continuing Prof.Tariq Rafi said, now the situation has changed a lot. PM&DC and the HEC should have a similar rules and guidelines for journals as well as faculty appointments, selection and promotions. We at Jinnah Sindh Medical University, give Rs. 10,000/- to any postgraduate, faculty member who publishes a paper in Impact Factor Journal as an incentive and encouragement. We have also introduced a Module for students wherein they have to conduct research and write papers. This step was taken to promote the research culture as the main job of the universities is to produce research and promote research culture. He also recalled that during his visit to Iraq, he also learnt a lot from other delegation members which included many distinguished medical personalities including late Dr. Maqbool H. Jafary.

Prof. Lubna Baig Pro Vice Chancellor of JSMU speaking at the occasion recalled that when she wrote her first paper, the reviewer’s comments were so harsh that she decided that she will never write a paper again. However, later I persisted and continued writing and gradually with experience learnt this art. Later Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid and other colleagues involved me in workshops on medical writing. She further stated that writing was no doubt a difficult task but one must learn this art and document whatever they are doing. Faculty members must write papers and contribute to the medical literature. We at JSMU have plans to organize a series of workshops on Medical Writing for faculty and students and would be glad for any help and assistance in this regard.

Prof. Jamshed Akhtar President of Pakistan Association of Medical Editors (PAME) in his speech said that our public hospitals are full of clinical research material. We need to impress upon the faculty members to use this research material, document what they are doing and write papers. Research material from Dissertations written for FCPS should be used and make sure to publish the findings of this research work. He was of the view that universities should also put their research work on their website. Public sector universities can do a lot. Our faculty members need to overcome their inhibitions to write, they should be encouraged, provided help, assistance and incentives to do research and publish papers. We at PAME Prof. Jamshed Akhtar stated always encourage authors but we cannot write papers on their behalf. Medical Journals also need to improve their standard and accept good quality papers for publication. Only good original research work if published will improve the citations and thus Impact Factor of our journals. We should also be mindful of our conflict of interest, he added. Prof. Jamshed Akhtar also presented the mementoes to Prof. Tariq Rafi and Prof. Lubna Baig on behalf of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences.

Earlier Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid said that medical journalism has now emerged as an important discipline and a specialty in its own write. It is combination of art and science. Medical Journals need to have professional, trained editors to ensure regular publication. He also gave historical background to the start of this training course which was started to pay homage and recognize the contributions made by founder Chief Editor of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences late Dr. Maqbool H. Jafary who was also my mentor. He also shared the details of training courses organized for the Editors from PAME platform during the last few years. He the highlighted the contents of his latest book jointly authored by him and Dr. Masood Jawaid on “Scientific Writing: A Guide to the Art of Medical Writing and Scientific Publishing”. It has thirty one contributors and thirty six chapters. The idea behind this book was to benefit from the collective wisdom of eminent editors, researchers from Pakistan and overseas who have shared their valuable knowledge and experience in this field.
