RAWALPINDI: Professor of Neuro-Gastroenterology and Director Wingate Institute of Neuro-Gastroenterology, Bart’s and the London, Queen Mary University, London, UK; Dr. Qasim Aziz, PhD, FRCP visited National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) Rawalpindi at Professional Development Center to deliver an enlightening talk on Neuro-Gastroenterology as well as developing Research modalities on the topic on October 24,2017.

He encouraged the young doctors at NUMS to explore various aspects of Neuro-gastroenterology and research on this vast domain. He said that there are various possibilities for collaboration between NUMS and Queen Mary University, U.K. like Short-term mid-course faculty exchange programs, Summer Electives for Faculty/ Students, Joint research projects, thesis review etc. Development of Biomaterials or devices could be taken as subjects of research as well as developing linkages between academia- industry- government; the triple helix model.

Later, a full house discussion was led by the Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen Syed Muhammad Imran Majeed, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Maj Gen (Retd) Muhammad Aslam, and attended by Dr. Muhammad Sohail of Oxford University; Prof. Dr. Qasim Aziz and Dean of Research/ Academic Development, Professor Dr. Mujtaba Quadri of National University of Medical Sciences.

Through a presentation, Dr. Rehma Gilani opened the discussion on launching of an official journal of NUMS by the name of “Life and Science’, which is going to be an open access, peer reviewed journal of science.

The guests reflecting their experience emphasized that the journal should be projected globally like going to Pub-Med with careful selection of Editorial Board. Mechanism of “Open Axis” and Standardization based on impact, focus on communicable diseases, high quality meta-analysis, good systematic reviews ensuring quality with emphasis on environmental & social health were other suggestions given for gaining impact factor with time and original research topics.

Significance of Ethical aspects on inclusion of advertisement and involvement of social media in improving recognition and improving circulation of the Journal could be key consideration in launching of the Scientific Journal. Mutual agreement on collaborative efforts by all parties was consummated with note of thanks from Vice Chancellor NUMS, Lt Gen Syed Muhammad Imran Majeed, HI(M). (PR)
