Prof. Naeem Aon Jafarey an eminent educationist who was an important pillar of Basic Medical Sciences Institute at country’s premier postgraduate medical institution, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center Karachi for many years passed away on Monday November 2, 2015 at the age of 86 years. He and Prof. Sadiqua Jafary his wife were important members of the JPMC faculty and both retired some years ago after a distinguished service.

Late Prof. Naeem Jafary graduated from King Edward Medical College and then proceeded to USA for training in anatomical pathology. He returned to Pakistan in 1964 after acquiring membership of American Board of Pathology and joined JPMC, served there in different capacities and eventually retired in 1989. He had special interest in medical education and when WHO started a programme for training the teachers, he joined as a local team facilitator. Later a department of medical education was established at CPSP in 1979 where he was one of the co-Directors. He laid the foundation of faculty development at CPSP with the help of WHO. He was the moving spirit in coordinating, planning, teaching strategies and assessment programmers. He was a member of the team which initiated Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs), and ObjectiveStructured ClinicalExamination (OSCE) in general as well as OSCE examination of Diploma in Family Medicine.

He became the founding Vice chancellor of Ziauddin University when Ziauddin Medical College got university charter in 1995. He retired in 2004 and became Professor Emeritus and also served as Advisor on academic affairs at Ziauddin University. He was also affiliated with Journal of Pakistan Medical Association and worked hard to streamline its peer review system when late Dr.Sarwar J. Zuberi was its Chief Editor. He was Chairman of Editorial Board of JPMA from 2001-2004.

Late Prof. Naeem Jafary was a very quiet, humble man whom God Almighty had gifted with numerous qualities. He was an excellent teacher and leaves behind a large number of friends, well-wishers including large number of students and family members to mourn his death. A condolence meeting was organized at Ziauddin University on November 4th to pay homage to the departed soul where speakers paid him rich tributes and recalled his services to promote medical education and the discipline of pathology.

PMA also organized a condolence meeting at PMA House Karachi on November 11th 2015. Dr. Shaukat Malik was the moderator of this session in which Dr. Fatema Jawad Editor-in-Chief of JPMA read a citation paying rich tributes to late Prof. Naeem Jafarey. Prof. Sirajudullah Syed, Dr. Shahid Mustafa and Prof. Alamgir speaking on the occasion recalled the contributions of Prof. Naeem Jafarey in the field of pathology, oral cancer and starting a cancer registry. He was founder member of Pakistan Association of Pathologists and a keen researcher. Mr. Iqbal Dewan one of his family members became very emotional while highlighting the qualities of mind and heart of Prof. Naeem Jafarey. Prof. S. Haroon Ahmad said that with the departure of late Dr. S. J. Zuberi and late Prof. Naeem Jafarey we have lost two keen researchers. Dr. Amir Jafarey said that Prof. Naeem Jafarey was a very fair thinking personality who never intimidated any one and he was never undress stress. Dr. Kaiser Sajjad termed him a good human being while Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid highlighted his contributions to BMSI and the JPMC. He was a very contented person and lived a happy life something which is lacking among most of the healthcare professionals these days, he remarked.

Prof. Nighat Huda said Prof. Naeem Jafarey and Prof. Fazal Ellahi were the founder members of the Dept. of Medical Educaiotn at CPSP. He always started his presentation highlighting the Health Indicators of Pakistan and felt that medical education in Pakistan should respond to the health system of the country.Doctors should know the health indicators. He was of the view that we cannot teach everything to the students hence they should be trained in self-directed learning. He emphasized the importance of adult learning principles and we introduced PBL at Ziauddin University in 1996 under his leadership.  He never wanted any sweeping powers for himself as Vice Chancellor of Ziauddin University. He realized the importance of Family Physicians and Dept. of Family Medicine was established at Ziauddin University under his directions. Prof. Tipu Sultan and Dr. S. Naeem ulHague also spoke on the occasion and urged those present to follow the legacy left behind by late Prof. Naeem Jafary. Later Fateha was also offered for the departed soul.
