LAHORE: Acute Medicine is a new specialty in UK. It acts as a buffer zone between hospitals and emergency medicine department. It was established as a separate entity in 2003 and by 2018 the government wishes to have one thousand trained Acute Medicine specialists in UK. This was stated by Dr. Fraz Arif Mir Associate International Director South Asia of Royal College of Physicians London. He was making a presentation on “Acute Medicine- an aging specialty in modern healthcare” at Azra Naheed Medical College, Lahore on October 9th 2014 during his recent visit to Pakistan.

Improved data reveals higher global burden of tuberculosis

GENEVA: Recent intensive efforts to improve collection and reporting of data on tuberculosis (TB) are shedding new light on the epidemic, revealing that there are almost half a million more cases of the disease than previously estimated. The World Health Organization’s Global Tuberculosis Report 2014, published recently shows that 9 million people developed TB in 2013, and 1.5 million died, including 360 000 people who were HIV positive.

Public Knowledge Project and CrossRef Collaborate to Improve Services for Publishers using Open Journal Systems

CrossRef and the Public Knowledge Project (PKP) are collaborating to help publishers and journals using the Open Journal Systems (OJS) platform take better advantage of CrossRef services. The collaboration involves an institutional arrangement between CrossRef and PKP, and new software features. Features include an improved CrossRef plugin for OJS that will automate Digital Object Identifier (DOI) deposits, as well as plans to create new tools for extracting references from submissions.
