Otsuka awareness campaign against Hepatitis

Healthcare professionals including nurses,
paramedics needs to be constantly reminded
to uphold professional ethics-Dr.Ghazala Bhatti

We need medical and nursing textbooks written by local authors

KARACHI: Despite the fact that working in public healthcare facilities which are facing financial constraints and numerous other problems is extremely difficult but even then healthcare professionals including nurses and paramedics needs to be constantly reminded to uphold professional ethics. Safety of the patients should be our first priority and each one of us should try to do our best to come up to the patients expectations. Otsuka has a very long association with the medical profession and its efforts to create awareness against hepatitis spread are indeed commendable. This was stated by Dr.Ghazala Bhatti Associate Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Karachi Medical & Dental College, Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Karachi. She was performing the Otsuka Lucky draw in connection with their on-going campaign against Hepatitis spread, at a meeting held at Otsuka Head office on October 28th 2013.

Dr. Ghazala Bhatti Assoc. Prof. of Obs. and Gynae at KM&DC,
ASH performing the Otsuka Lucky Draw at Otsuka Head Office on Oct. 28th 2013.

Continuing Dr. Ghazala Bhatti said that nurses and paramedics in particular need to be reminded again and again about the safe practices regarding the use of Intravenous Infusions so that it becomes a routine practice. In the developed world, they use specially designed IV infusions bottles but in Pakistan pricking of IV bottles is one of the major causative factors for the spread of Hepatitis which has now become an epidemic. It is important that we use medical textbooks and training manuals or the nurses as well as paramedics which are written and prepared by our own people. We have a nursing school and training facilities for paramedics, technicians as well and she will be too glad to talk to the administration and include some educational material in their training programmes. She was of the view that it is the duty of the senior healthcare professionals to contribute in this regard and share their knowledge and experience with others so that the younger generation of doctors, nurses and paramedics are better prepared to effectively manage the patients which will go a long way in improving patient care. We have to keep in mind our cultural practices and majority of the illiterate population which needs proper health education and counseling to manage their diseases.
Referring to her keen interest in breast diseases, she said that they have been running a Breast Clinic at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital now for quite some time and over the years they have accumulated lot of data which is now being compiled and hopefully it will be published soon. We plan to publish a Newsletter on Breast Diseases as well. She appreciated the contributions of Otsuka in helping the healthcare professionals in various ways and urged them to provide the same facilities to their department at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital which they have been providing to other healthcare facilities including data collection, syringe cutters, patient awareness literature etc. As a multinational research based company, Otsuka should have a vision for many years to come and whatever programme they initiate should not only be informative, useful but also sustainable on long term basis which will enhance the prestige and image of the company to a great extent, she added.
