LARKANA: Pakistan Orthopaedic Association (POA) has helped the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Chandka Medical College Hospital, Larkana to establish an air-conditioned Seminar Room in the department which is equipped with audiovisual aids including multimedia for presentations. The seminar room has a seating capacity for thirty people although it can also accommodate up to forty participants if need be. The project so far, it is learnt, has cost sixty lacs rupees of which forty lacs were provided by the Pakistan Orthopaedic Association. The foundation stone of this seminar room was laid by Prof. Younis Soomro and Prof. Anisuddin Bhatti on February 15th 2015 and it has been completed within a year. It was formally inaugurated by Dr. Amin Chinoy President of Pakistan Orthopaedic Association along with Prof. Anisuddin Bhatti a noted orthopaedic surgeon and currently Director of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center, Karachi on April 30th 2016 which was preceded by a workshop on Scientific Paper writing.

POA, Prof. Anisuddin Bhatti, Dr. Irshad Bhutto
and Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid.

Tracing the history it was stated by Dr. Samir Soomro said that one of the aims of Pakistan Orthopaedic Association was to promote academic activities. It holds international conferees regularly and the funds which it saves from these conferences are utilized for such academic purposes including offering scholarships for training within the country. Orthopaedic conferences are held in rotation in all the provinces in major cities but once it was also held in Hyderabad where some of the delegates complained of poor quality of hotel accommodations and after discussions it was decided that in future these conferences should not be organized in small cities where no proper accommodation facilities are available. However, the departments in small cities will be allowed to organize these conferences in major cities. Hence the Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery at CMCH Larkana was given the responsibility to organize the 26th International Orthopaedic Conference PAK ORTHOCON from December 6-9th 2012 at Karachi. As per decisions of the Board, 50% of the savings is given to the organizing department to improve their teaching and training facilities. As such the POA gave about forty lacs of rupees to the Dept. for setting up this seminar room.

Prof. Asadullah Maher Head of the Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery gave the back ground of this development and how they had won the bid to organize orthopaedic conference in 2012 during the meeting held in 2011 at Lahore. We were able to put up a good show though we had to travel to Karachi quite a few times to attend meetings of the organizing committee, he added. Prof. Anisuddin Bhatti and Dr. Zameer Soomro helped us a lot. It was a team work and with the help and assistance of our colleagues we were able to invite thirteen foreign speakers from overseas. We were able to save some funds from this conference and as per agreement we managed to get some of those savings for setting up this seminar room. Now we have plans to get it connected with the Operation Theater so that we can show live surgical procedures to the participants. Hopefully we will realize this dream as well in the days to come, he added.

Keeping up the tradition of Sindh and its culture, Prof. Anisuddin Bhatti Director JPMC, Prof. Asadullah
Maher and Prof. Sher Mohammad Khan are presenting Sindhi Ajrak and Cap to the guests after the
formal inauguration of Seminar Room at Dept. of Orthopaedics at CMCH Larkana on April 30th 2016.

Prof. Anisuddin Bhatti in his speech said that when that conference was organized, law and order situation was not very good in Karachi but we accepted it as a challenge and were able to invite thirteen foreign speakers. POA also offers scholarships to orthopaedic surgeons for six months to twelve months for specialization in different sub-specialties but this training has to be in Pakistan.

Prof. Sher Mohammad Shaikh Principal of Chandka Medical College and Regional Director of CPSP in his speech on this occasion said that the main job of the institutions is to produce knowledge and higher education in the university. Prof. Asad Maher and his team were moving very fast and hoped that it will encourage others as well. Vice Chancellor of SMBBMU will be too glad to extend all possible help and assistance to improve services in the department, he added.

presenting Sindhi Ajrak and Cap to the guests after the formal inauguration of the
Seminar Room at Dept. of Orthopaedics at CMCH Larkana on April 30th 2016.

Dr. Amin Chinoy President of Pakistan Orthopedic Association speaking on the occasion said every orthopaedic conference has been better than the previous ones in terms of scientific contents though there may have been some short comings and room for improvements is always there. Karachi team was doing all sort of workshops. We are grateful to the pharmaceutical trade and industry which always sponsors such academic events. About 25% from the conference savings is used to award scholarships for training in different sub-specialties within the country. We should not neglect small towns and peripheral areas. POA has helped Civil Hospital Karachi, JPMC and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital to help improve their teaching and training facilities in different ways. With the help of USAID we were able to start Ponseti programme and so far forty doctors have been trained and now twenty four centers in Pakistan are providing these facilities. POA was also involved in organizing Total Knee Replacement workshops and other courses. We must identify our shortcoming and try to rectify those, Dr. Amin Chinoy concluded. Later the traditional Sindhi Ajrak and Cap were presented to the guests and speakers besides members of the organizing committee. Later the guests and Heads of the Departments from other units at Chandka Medical College Hospital were entertained at lunch sponsored by M/s PharmEvo Pharmaceuticals. Mr. Khalid Bhatti Assistant Sales Manager PharmEvo was involved in the organization of the workshop as well as the inauguration ceremony of the seminar room and helped the team in the Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery at CMCH Larkana in this regard.
