Karachi: Pakistan Psychiatric Society (PPS) in collaboration with World Psychiatric Association(WPA) organized a seminar on Mental health and Future of Psychiatry” on 28th February 2020 at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi. Dr. Afzal Javed (President Elect WPA) was the Chief Guest while Emeritus Prof. Syed Haroon Ahmed was the Guest of Honour.

The speakers were Prof. Iqbal Afridi (President PPS), Prof Nasar Sayeed Khan, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Queens University Canada and Dr. Nabila Farooq, Medical Director, Michigan, USA. The meeting was attended by Psychiatrists, JPMC faculty members, Medical Students, Junior Doctors, Postgraduate trainees, occupational therapists, nursing students and other mental health professionals. Executive Director JPMC Dr. Seemin Jamali, Head of JPMC’s Academic Council & Head of Radiology-Prof.Tariq Mehmood, Emeritus Professor of Neurology Hassan Aziz, founder member of Epilepsy Association of Pakistan, Chairman Sindh Mental Authority, Dr. Karim Khwaja, Dr. Naeem Siddiqi (SIUT), Dr. Zafar Haider & Prof. Raza ur Rehman (Karwan e Hayat), Dr. Ayesha Sarwat(DUHS), Dr. Almasuddin Qazi (Innovative General Surgeon, UK) were among some of the distinguished guests.

organized by PPS in collaboration with World Psychiatric Association at JPMC recently.

Prof. Iqbal Afridi, President of Pakistan Psychiatric Society & Dean of JPMC, JSMU (faculty of Medicine) & Faculty of Psychiatry, CPSP welcomed the guest speakers and the participants. The first speaker was Dr. Nabila Abidi who talked about recognizing Psychiatric Issues(depression) with Medical Ailments’. This was followed by talk on tigma in Psychiatry by Prof Nasar Sayeed. He especially highlighted the depiction of mental illnesses, mental health professionals and care facilities in media, which was far away from reality and this has resulted in a massive damage to the profession, professionals and more importantly the sufferers.

Prof. Afridi spoke about Mental Health-Unlocking your Potential, which discussed the importance of mental health, its components, application to our daily lives, mental faculties, learning, cognition & metacognition(thinking about thinking), memory. He emphasized the importance of intelligence versus memory. He spoke about improving mental health through diet & lifestyle and enhancing capabilities via tapping on to human potential.

Dr. Afzal Javed spoke about Future of Psychiatry: Needs, Opportunities & Challenges. A talk which compared psychiatry to other medical fields. He clarified the misconceptions about psychiatric treatment, medications etc. He advocated for mental health needs to be evaluated on evidence not on perceptions, changes in policies, changes in services & training plus curricula.

During the meeting a scroll was also presented to Dr. Afzal Javed declaring him as the most distinguished Global Psychiatrist by the Pakistan Psychiatric Society in recognition of his services to social, transcultural psychiatry and Research.
