Lahore Fatima Memorial Hospital started its journey as a 200-Bed Maternity and Child Hospital and over the years it has now developed into a multidisciplinary tertiary care hospital. This was stated by Prof. Rakhshanda Rehman Dean School of Health Sciences and Vice Chancellor of Nur International University while speaking at the inaugural session of FHM International Conference on “General Medical Updates” held from 27th February to March 1, 2019. The conference was also attended by six invited Guest Speakers from UK and United States who richly contributed to the scientific programme. Governor of Punjab was the chief guest in this session.

Prof. Mrs. Rakhshanda Rehman Vice Chancellor of Nur International University alongwith
Mrs. Shahima Rehman presenting mementoes to Governor of Punjab Mohammad Sarwar
and Punjab Health Minister Prof. Yasmin Rashid during the inaugural session of International
Conference organized by Fatima Memorial System at FMH on February 27th 2019.

Continuing Prof. Rakhshanda Rehman stated that FMH belongs to the Third sector, Not for Profit NGO and numerous institutions have been established since 1977 which are now affiliated with FHM. These include medical college, dental college, College of Nursing, Institute of Allied Health Sciences, Vocational Training Institute, Postgraduate training, CME just to name a few. More recently Maternal fetal Medicine set up has been established at FHM which is the only other such facility in the country after Aga Khan University Hospital at Karachi. Sub-specialties of Rheumatology started here besides the discipline of Family Medicine. It has emerged as the leading medical college in the province and our students have brought laurels to this institution. College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan has recognized it for postgraduate training in twenty disciplines. So far 8.59 million patients have been treated here and after adding the Hijaz Hospital which is affiliated with us the total bed strength comes to six hundred beds. It got charter of University from the Government of Punjab in 2014. It is a home grown model but our charter does not cover Health Sciences. She made a passionate appeal to the Chief Guest Governor of Punjab to add Health Sciences in the charter of NIU so that we can contribute to our full potential in the field of Medical Education and Health Services. She further stated that five sub-specialties in Dentistry have been added and specialists were being trained in those disciplines as well. She then showed some glimpses of their primary healthcare center and functioning of the Mobile Health Unit which were doing a great job providing primary healthcare besides empowering the community by training them in the Vocational Training Institute. Conferences like this provide an excellent opportunity to the students to interact with eminent faculty from overseas and learn from their knowledge and experience. FMH has also emerged as the No.1 choice of medical students for enrollment in the province of Punjab in the private sector which reflects its high standard, he concluded.

Governor of Punjab Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar in his address on this occasion said that contributions by Fatima Memorial Hospital will be very helpful which needs to be commended. It is a successful journey from 1977 which is a great achievement. FMH was doing a wonderful job for the country. You will always get mine as well as the provincial and federal government’s full support. You have also helped the victims of national disasters. He further remarked that as a chancellor whenever he goes to a convocation to any medical institution, most of the Gold Medals and Distention’s are won by the girls who have not only beaten the boys but virtually knocked out them. It looks as if after another ten years, women will be ruling this country and hopefully they will serve better than the men. Recommendations of the conference, he promised, will be given a serious consideration. FHM is a role model for other medical institutions in the country, he remarked.
