diagnosis and management of Tuberculosis

DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Department of Community Medicine at Gomal Medial College recently organized a seminar on TB awareness under the supervision of Dean Gomal Medical Teaching Institution, Dr. Akhtar Munir Gandapur and Dr. Iftikhar Gandapur (Head of Department, Community Medicine) with Dr. Rizwan Baloch as resource person.

A large number of invited health professionals participated along with guest speakers. Dr. Samina Qadir discussed the Importance of TB Day and highlighted the theme of the 2018 Word TB Day “WANTED LEADERS TO END TB”. The presentation emphasized on the need how leaders from all over the world can join hands in eradicating the TB globally. Following this a number of presenters from different clinical specialties discussed TB related to their own specialty.

Dr. Saima, Histopathologists, presented ‘Cytology and Histopathology of TB and diagnosis’. Dr. Abdur Rehman, Physician, and Dr. Waseem, General Surgeon, highlighted Pulmonary and Abdominal TB. The ‘effects of TB on Pregnant Women and Growing Fetus’ was discussed by Dr. Irum Batool, Consultant Gynecologist, while Dr. Taj Muhammad, Consultant Pediatrician discussed ‘Childhood TB and Diagnostic challenges in Children’.  Skeletal TB was discussed by Dr. Shafiq, the orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Irfan ullah, PhD. Dr. Akhlaq Ahmad Awan, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Pharmacy and Dr. Affaq, ENT specialist, made presentations on Gene Expert, ‘Safe delivery of drugs and cervical lymphadenopathy respectively.

The speakers discussed almost all aspect of tuberculosis and its treatment... Apart from health professionals students also participated actively through videos presentation about TB and its effects on society. A quiz competition was also conducted to judge the knowledge of students, house officers and medical trainees. Students also participated in poster competition. The best three were selected for cash prizes.

Dr. Akhtar Munir who graced the occasion with his presence as Chief Guest addressing the meeting highlighted different aspects of TB, its effects on community and praised the efforts of community medicine department for arranging an interesting, informative academic event. He wished that more such seminars should be organized to create awareness about different diseases besides organizing workshops for the staff of Medical Teaching Institutions at Dera Ismail Khan.

Dr. Iftikhar Gandapur, Head of the Dept. of Community Medicine speaking at the occasion showed concern regarding increasing incidence of multi-drug resistant TB (MDR & XDR) in the province generally and Dera Ismail Khan District in particular. He thanked all the presenters and participants. He said the Department of Community Medicine would continue such activities, to create awareness about different diseases in the community.

Community Medicine Department, Gomal Medical College, it may be mentioned here is one of the most active departments of Gomal Medical Teaching Institution. It avails every opportunity of creating awareness in the community regarding current health issues including Thalassemia, Tuberculosis, and all other problems of public health importance. (PR)
