Late Prof. Moinuddin MBBS, MSc, FRCP

(Sept. 15, 1939 to May 6, 2017)

Late Prof. Moinuddin who died at Karachi on May 6, 2017 was born on September 15, 1939.He did his MBBS from King Edward Medical College Lahore in1962 and later got Membership of Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh in 1967.  He was awarded Fellowship of Royal College of Physicians Canada in Laboratory and Hematology in 1971 and then did MSc from McGill University Quebec Canada in 1972. He got Fellowship in Clinical Hematology from Royal College of Physicians Canada in 1978 and was also honoured by Royal College of Physicians Edinburgh with its Fellowship in 1995.

Dr. Moinuddin was appointed Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Pathology at McGill University Canada in January 1973 where he served till December 1977. In January 1978 he joined Dept. of Pathology as Associate Professor in University Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  He served as Head of the Dept.of Medicine at Baqai Medical University from January 1981-1984. He was associated with a private hospital as consultant physician and clinical hematologist from 1984-1987.  He then joined Sheikh Zayed Hospital, Federal Postgraduate Medial Institute Lahore as Prof. of Hematology where he served from March 1987 to March 1988. Then he rejoined Baqai Medial University as Prof. of Hematology and remained affiliated with BMU till his death.

He was an important member of the Baqai Medial University Faculty and held many administrative posts there thus contributed a great deal to the development of the university and its constituent institutions. He served as Director of Baqai Institute of Hematology which he founded from 1991 onward. He was Principal of Baqai Medical College form November 1993 to December 19999. He also served as Dean Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry Baqai Medical University from January 1994-March 2015. He was Deputy Executive Director of Baqai Institute of Pathology and Molecular Medicine since May 2008.

He was member of a number of national and international organizations in the field of hematology. He was keen research and contributed a great deal to the medical literature in the field of hematology. He had forty four scientific papers published in various peer reviewed national and international journals. To promote the discipline of Hematology, late Dr. Moinuddin published the following eighteen Monographs from 1955 to 2013:

Prof. Moinuddin was on the Editorial Board of Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences, Pakistan Journal of Paediatric, and Journal of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan. Eight candidates completed Ph.D. under his supervisor-ship while he was also supervisor for six M. Phil candidates besides helped in Dissertations of ten M.Sc. students.

Seventy six Hematology technologists got MSc  and twenty nine doctors got Diploma in Hematology which was a unique programme started by late Dr. Moinuddin in Pakistan.  He established the First Institute of Hematology in Pakistan at BMU in 1991 which was visited by a large number of eminent hematologists from overseas. The Institute of Hematology conducts short courses in Hematology for doctors and technicians regularly. These include the following:

Since 2009 the Institute of Hematology is offering MS programme in Transfusion Medicine which is again first of its kind in Pakistan which is approved by Pakistan Medical & Dental Council. He had prepared the curriculum and submitted it to the University for staring MD in Hematology and Diploma in Transfusion Techniques.

Late Dr. Moinuddin had four children. His elder daughter Dr. Farida is a dental surgeon who is settled in California, USA. Elder son Dr. Irfan is a Nephrologist settled in Virginia USA.  Second son Dr. Imran is a specialist in Internal Medicine and is in Maryland UISA while second daughter Dr. Saira has done FCPS in Hematology and is in Lahore.

A few days before his death he had chest pain and consulted a cardiologist. On May 6th he was getting ready to go for further checkup and consultation when he suffered from Acute Myocardial Infarction at about 8.30 AM and died soon after. His body was taken to Kasur in Punjab his native town for burial.  Late Dr. Moinuddin was a very simple, kind hearted God fearing physician who always had simple dress and had his own identity.  By nature he was a very conservative and had a quiet personality.  Management of Baqai Medical University deserve to be commended for its decision to rename Institute of Hematology as Moinuddin Institute of Hematology in recognition of his services.  He leaves behind a large number of friends, well-wishers and family members to mourn his death. May God Almighty rest the departed soul in Peace and give the family courage to bear this loss. Ameen
