KARACHI: Malir University of Science and Technology (MUST) will address the higher education needs of lower and middle income group. The fee structure finalized has been made affordable for this segment of our society. This institution is a unique in the sense as the students who will be enrolled will pay fee which is charged by the public sector institutions while the faculty will be paid at par with private universities. This was stated by Prof. S. Tipu Sultan Chancellor of the newly established Malir University of Science and Technology based at Karachi. He was speaking in the formal launch meeting of the university held at a local hotel on May 24th 2016. The meeting was very well attended by a select group of healthcare professionals which included quite a few Vice Chancellor of private universities including government officials and representatives of the society.

Education and Health, Prof. Tipu Sultan said was a basic human right of every citizen. Pakistan has a very poor literacy rate and we all owe something to the society. Establishment of MUST which is a project of Zafar and Atia Foundation Charitable Trust which we have established in memory of our parents was a humble attempt on our part to pay back to the society. We have donated 17-Acre Family Farm in Malir for this project where a 130-Bed General Hospital is already functioning for the last many years. We started training programme for Midwives by establishing Atia School of Midwifery and so far ten batches have qualified who are serving the community. Institute of Nursing and Atia School of Paramedics are also already functioning at Kohi Goth, Deh Landhi in BinQasim Town. City Campus of MUST has been established at Malir.  We have to invest in health and education if we as a Nation wish to make some progress.  He thanked Dr. Mangero and Dr. Nighat Shah who took personal interest and helped us a great deal so that we could realize our dream of setting up this university.

Dr. Sher Shah Syed in his address traced the history of establishment of universities in the world which interestingly according to him started from Taxila in Pakistan. Universities established in America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand did not make any profit. We need such institutions in Pakistan if we have to promote education in the country, he remarked.

Prof. Mehtab Karim the Founder Vice Chancellor of MUST talked about the state of higher education in Pakistan and said that there was a great difference between the top universities in Medicine as well as Business between those run by the private sector and in the public sector. As per HEC ranking AKU is the top medical university while LUMS was the top business university. We need complete overhauling of research and faculty development. It is the leadership which makes and breaks these institutions. There was a time when distinguished personalities were heading public sector universities but since 90s, the students were politicized and so was the case with the faculty which started the deterioration process and the situation has now gone from bad to worse. Most of the universities established in the private sector are either owned by real estate property tycoons or Businessmen, individual ownership which are all for profit. Subjects like humanities and social sciences are completely neglected. Faculty members are hired to teach and there is no research although the main objective of the universities is to create knowledge for which research is a must. Unfortunately many private universities were just selling degrees. He then gave details of the programmes which MUST intends to introduce in various phases starting from BBA, BS in Computer Science and BS in Health Sciences and Medical Technology from this year.

Earlier Prof. Sirajudullah Syed Pro Vice Chancellor of MUST in his welcome address said that their parents migrated to Pakistan in 1939 and started living in Layari where their father Abu Zafar established Ghazi High School from where I and my brothers qualified. We lived in Layari for seventeen years and later shifted to Malir where we are living now for the last thirty five years. Income from Atia Hospital Malir is being used to run this Free Hospital in Kohi Goth where there is no cash counter. Education in Pakistan has become a commodity which people have to buy. It should not become a business and we will ensure that MUST and its affiliated institutions will provide affordable education and services. We need your support to run it successfully so that it is sustainable in the long run, he added.
