 Otsuka awareness campaign against Hepatitis

Pricking of Iv infusion Bottle is still
a comon practice in our healthcare
setups-Dr. Saleem Ahmed Soomro

KARACHI: Pricking of IV infusion bottles is still a very common practice especially in public hospitals because products provided are not of good quality.  Healthcare providers are always at high risk of getting Hepatitis B and C due to needle stick injuries (NSI) and they should follow the standard SOPs to protect themselves. Ethical practice and emphasis on prevention of the diseases are important to prevent Hepatitis and other communicable diseases. This was stated by Dr. Saleem Ahmed Soomro, Professor and Head Department of Surgery Ward 26, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi. He was performing the Otsuka lucky draw in connection with Otsuka awareness campaign against Hepatitis held at Ward 26, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi on June 26, 2018.

Dr. Saleem Ahmed Soomro, performing the Otsuka lucky draw held at Surgical Ward 26,
Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre Karachi on June 26, 2018.

Dr. Saleem Ahmed Soomro, urged that quality products must be purchased for public hospitals to avoid complications due to Pricking and poor quality of material used for packaging etc. Nursing syllabus should be updated to emphasize on proper handling of IV preparations, avoid pricking and unethical practices. Majority of health professionals specially involved in surgical procedures and Operation theaters are infected due to needle stick injuries while recapping the syringes because they are not properly trained to handle the instruments in addition to their careless attitude. Majority of injuries are not reported because we do not have any Registry to report such cases.  Medical Professionals must follow standard operating protocol which will help them to protect themselves from getting infected which is a major problem being faced by healthcare providers. He appreciated the Otsuka awareness campaign against Hepatitis being carried out through print and electronic media to educate the healthcare professionals and the public providing quality products without compromising on quality which is highly appreciated.

Earlier Ms. Uzma Mustafa Product Manager Otsuka Pakistan, in her introductory remarks said that we are playing our role as corporate social responsibility. Besides awareness campaign and other CME activities we are providing quality IV infusion bottles which does not need pricking. Otsuka Field Force visit doctors every month to create awareness regarding this campaign and provide them printed information material. Dr. Nanik Ram from Sanghar was the lucky winner of a bumper prize for the month of June 2018 lucky draw.
