No. 1 Position of having Highest Impact Factor

KARACHI: Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences has successfully retained the No. 1 position of having the highest Impact Factor among the Pakistani Medical Journals for the second consecutive year. The Journal Citation Report released by Thompson Reuters recently shows that Pak J Med Sci has current Impact Factor of 0.696, JPMA is at No. 2 with an Impact Factor 0.616 while Journal of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan is at No. 3 with an Impact Factor of 0.372.

Number of Citations from a Journal is another important factor and in this as usual JPMA being the oldest medical journal had the highest number of citations for the current year 2185, followed by Journal of College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan which had had 1299 citations while Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences had 1154 citations.

Pakistan Journal of Medial Sciences has registered an enormous increase in its number of citations during the last year which increased from six hundred fifty (650) in 2015 to one thousand one hundred fifty four (1154) almost 100% increase in its citations which is a very encouraging development. Pak J Med Sci, it may be mentioned here attracts manuscripts from a large number of countries particularly from countries like Turkey, Peoples Republic of China, Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East, Islamic Republic of Iran and numerous other countries in South Asia and Asia-Pacific Region.

At present only twelve biomedical journals from Pakistan which includes three medical journals has got an Impact Factor. According to reports a number of other medical journals from Pakistan desire to have an Impact Factor and have also applied for coverage but no new journal has made it to the Journal Citation Report Web of Sciences this year. Impact Factor, it may be mentioned here is one of the criteria but not the only one to judge the quality and standard of a journal.
