PESHAWAR: Over three hundred bed Peshawar Institute of Cardiology has formally started functioning and cardiac surgery has also started. Dr. Shahkar Ahmad Shah a noted cardiac surgeon has been appointed Medical Director of this tertiary cardiac care facility and a team of experienced cardiologists and cardiac surgeons has been appointed by the provincial government.

In the Department of cardiology the consultants include Dr. Abidullah who has come from UK while Dr. Shah Zeb Khan who was till recently working at Dept. of Cardiology at Lady Reading Hospital has joined here. Dr. Jibran is another consultant cardiologist. The Department of Cardiac surgery is headed by Dr. Abdul Nasir who has also come from UK while Dr. Tariq Khan is the Assistant Professor. The department has six Registrars. There are said to be about ninety beds in the Coronary Care Unit and Intensive care unit. According to yet another report the department of cardiology at Lady Reading Hospital may be shifted to Peshawar Institute of Cardiology in the near future. The building of the institute was ready almost two years ago but the facility could not be commissioned so far due to various reasons. Once the service started, many problems have been noted and the administration is trying to sort them out. The institute has all the facilities needed for a tertiary cardiac care facility.
