Within a short span of a year three eminent physiologists of Pakistan have passed away. Brig Prof Dr. Muhammad Amjad Hameed expired on 5th August 2020 in Islamabad. Earlier, Prof Arif Siddiqui (From Karachi) and Prof Dr. Nusrat Waqar (from Lahore) left this mortal world. May Allah bless their soul with eternal peace (Aameen).

Prof. Amjad Hameed was born on 22nd April 1939 in village No 87 Haripur, Shakot, Punjab. He did his BSc in 1959 from Government College, Faisalabad and graduated his MBBS from King Edward Medical College (Now a University), Lahore in 1964. Thereafter, he did his DPH (Diploma in Public Health) from University of Punjab, Lahore in 1974 and acquired DTCD (Diploma in Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases) from University of Punjab, Lahore in 1975. He qualified his M.Phil. (Physiology) from Postgraduate Medical Institute (PGMI), University of Punjab Lahore in 1981. He was conferred FCPS (Physiology) by the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) in 2003 in recognition to his meritorious contributions in the discipline. It is evident from his ladder of education that Prof. Hameed was thirsty and hungry to seek and improvise knowledge from Public Health to Chest Diseases to Physiological Sciences.

Soon after his graduation and house job, he joined Army Medical Corps, Pakistan Army and was blessed to take part in 1965 war at Chawinda sector, Sialkot. From 1969-1971, he was deputed to Jordon by Pakistan Army. During 1971 War, he served at Okara. From 1975-1977, he served as Commanding Officer of a Field Ambulance in Tarar Khel, AJK. He was then posted as an Instructor to AFPGMI (Armed Forces Postgraduate Medical Institute), Rawalpindi from 1977-1979. From there, he was selected to be deputed to PGMI, Lahore to do his M.Phil. in Physiology from 1979-1981. He served at Army Medical College, Rawalpindi as an Assistant Professor/Associate Professor/Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology from 1982-1992 from where he got retired gracefully. After his retirement from Pakistan Army, Prof Hameed remained as Prof and Head of Department of Physiology at Islamic International Medical College, Riphah International University, Rawalpindi from 1996-2009.

Prof. Hameed was passionate for research pursuits and one of the pioneers to trigger research in High Altitude Physiology and Medicine in Pakistan from 1984-1992. He proceeded for research training to USARIEM (United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicines and Pike Peak Colorado, USA) and to Guy’s Hospital, London, UK for nine months in 1985. From 2003-2009, Prof Hameed supervised FCPS students in Physiology for their research projects.

Prof. Hameed played a pro-active role in upgradation of Physiologists in the country. He was one of the pioneer members to establish Pakistan Physiological Society (PPS) in collaboration with university of Karachi and the Aga Khan University, Karachi. He was the President of the organizing committee of 2nd PPS Conference held at Army Medical College, Rawalpindi in 1989 and it became a trend-setter for biennial rotatory conferences of the society all over Pakistan. The PPS, in fact, gave birth to emergence of the South Asian Association of Physiologists (SAAP) in the region. Prof Hameed was elected as President PPS and strived his contributions as President PPS from1989-1991.

Big Hameed was an honest, straight forward, open and a truthful person. He was illustrious and industrious. His morality and attributes to Islam were beyond any reproach. He was disciplined and a dedicated medical teacher in Physiology. He looked after his ailing parents with utmost care for decades. Brig. Prof Dr. M. Amjad Hameed had a special interest in Cardio-pulmonary Physiology and Medicine with several Publications in the elegant Peer-reviewed Journals. He has left in his legacy a wife, two sons (one an eminent Physiologist and the other an able Engineer) and a daughter, loving close family members, his patients, friends and hundreds of colleagues and students.

May Almighty Allah bless his soul with eternal peace and grant courage to the saddened family to bear this irreparable loss (Aameen).
