Prof. Tariq Rafi urges Government to transfer
all faculty positions from JPMC to JSMU

Demands transfer of Govt. College Building in Korangi
to JSMU so that it can start a Boys Medical College there

KARACHI: Speaking at the Second Convocation of Jinnah Sindh Medical University held here on December 31st 2018, Prof. Tariq Rafi Vice Chancellor of JSMU has called upon the government to transfer all faculty positions at JPMC to the JSMU. As per traditions all over the world and in Pakistan faculty of teaching hospitals works under the administrative control of university whereas the hospital is controlled by the health department. Even at present almost 98% of the faculty of JPMC is on JSMU payroll. He also demanded the government to allow them to retain medical teachers by relaxing the retirement age and even beyond to overcome the problem of shortage of faculty.

Mr. Shabbir Ali Bijrani Sindh Minister for Mines and Mineral Resources was the Chief Guest on this occasion. The Convocation was largely attended by graduating students, their parents, and faculty members besides a large number of retired professors. Prof. Tariq Rafi also commended the vision of late Z.A. Bhutto who established the Sindh Medical College in 1973 and later Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto had promised to upgrade this to a medical university the promise which was fulfilled by her husband former President Asif Ali Zardari. Despite numerous problems the university, Prof. Tariq Rafi said has made tremendous progress over the years due to the devotion and dedication of the faculty. It has now ten medical and dental colleges affiliated with it which makes it the biggest public sector medical university in Sindh province and the second biggest in the country after UHS in Lahore. We have established seven institutes and four more are being established shortly which includes Institute of Family Medicine and Institute of Nursing. We are the first university to start online examination in the country.

Continuing Prof. Tariq Rafi said that we have invested over ten crore rupees in establishing a Skills Laboratory wherein the Alumni of SMC/JSMU has also contributed over hundred thousand dollars. We implemented the central admission policy whereby 3,150 students were selected out of thirty two thousand applicants who appeared in the examination and we had no court case challenging the test result because of transparency. Our teams are also working for the improvement of healthcare in Thar area. Government has allocated us twenty acres of land in Education city but keeping in view the proposed expansion and development, the university will require much more land, hence we will be grateful if the Sindh Government increases our land allocations to meet our future needs besides increasing our financial allocations.

He also referred to the increased enrollment of females in medical and dental colleges but it has been observed that a vast majority of them do not practice after graduation which is a wastage of government resources which spends almost over thirty lac of rupees on each graduating doctor. He urged them to work and serve the Nation and the ailing humanity so that we do not lose this talent.

Mr. Shabbir Ali Bijrani in his address stated that the government gives too much importance to the health sector because healthy individuals makes a healthy Nation. If individual’s physical and mental health problems are not resolved, it becomes a serious problem. That is why we promote health. JSMU, he said, is our valuable partner and we respect all intellectual thinkers. We are determined to promote knowledge based society. We will promote skills training as it will provide jobs to thousands of our youth. All medical colleges and universities are our national partners. He also commended the JSMU student Mustafa Hassan Alvi for his brilliant Valedictory speech. Earlier oath was administered to all the graduating students.
