LAHORE: Prof. Bashir Ahmad one of the pioneers of Neurosurgery in Pakistan who retired as Principal and Professor of Neurosurgery from King Edward Medical College Lahore passed away on Saturday December 14th 2014. May God Almighty rest the departed soul in eternal Peace. Ameen. He leaves behind a large number of friends and well wishers, students besides family members to mourn his death. His Nimaze- Jinaza on Saturday was attended by a large number of healthcare professionals including Vice Chancellors of medical universities, Principals of Medical Colleges and Deans of Postgraduate medical institutions.

Late Prof. Bashir Ahmad started his professional career in Pakistan from Nishtar Medical College Multan where he was invited by the then Principal of NMC Lt. Col. Najib Khan. At that time Dr. Bashir Ahmad was in UK. It was not at all a smooth sailing for him and he had to struggle a lot to establish the Dept. of Neurosurgery at Nishtar Medical College Multan. Later he shifted to Lahore and joined the Lahore General Hospital and established the Dept. of Neurosurgery at this institution. He started MS in Neurosurgery and trained a large number of Neurosurgeons for whom he was a Mentor and a role model.

He founded the Neurosurgery Dept. at Lahore General Hospital in 1964 and was the first Prof. of Neurosurgery in the province of Punjab. It was due to his commitment, devotion and dedication that the Lahore General Hospital became a center of excellence in the field of neurosurgery having 150-beds, with facilities of neuro radiology, neuro pathology, neuro psychology, neuro anesthesiology, and neuro-rehabilitation. This institution was equipped with a CT scan in 1979 along with state of the art operation theatre. This eventually emerged as the biggest neurosurgery center in the country. He earned a great name in the field of neurosurgery though his professional skills and competence. He served as Principal of King Edward Medical College from 1989-1993. He was also on the staff of Combined Military Hospital Lahore where he offered honorary services as consultant neurosurgeon. He was the founder member of Society of Neurosurgeons of Pakistan. He had keen interest in academics and research and represented Pakistan in the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies many times where he was one of the invited guest speakers. Soft spoken late Prof. Bashir Ahmad was very kind to his juniors, residents as well as his patients.

He also served as President of Society of Neurosurgeons of Pakistan, President Middle East Society of Neurosurgeons and was a visiting surgeon at many healthcare facilities at home and overseas. Pakistan Society of Surgeons also presented him the Life Time Achievement Award.
