How to use Media to communicate with Public

Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid in his invited talk on “How to use media to communicate with the public” pointed out that at present image of the medical profession was not so good simply because of their failure to communicate with public through effective use of the media. In the past researchers used to work in isolation in their laboratories and their work was scrutinized by their colleagues and peers. However, now the situation has changed. Research scientists are thrust into media limelight. They are accountable to public. Now information through media is disseminated very fast, public reaction can be rapid, irrational and at times uncontrollable. If the scientists fail to engage the media they risk their work being ignored or even misinterpreted.
It is important that one knows the media and its readership/audience. Efforts should be made to educate the public rather than self promotion. Maintain good relations with the journalists and try to establish yourself as a media source. While talking to the media, always remember to prepare three to five key messages and do not get de-railed. Prepare a press release highlighting the key messages and be prepared for provocative questions. Do not demand to approve the story before it is printed or aired, do not be defensive or hostile when asked about risks, side effects or contradicting opinions. It is also important not to be over exposed to media positioning oneself as the only expert. Scientists as well as organizations, he opined, should have a communication strategy for engaging the media rather than doing it on adhoc basis, he added.

Teaching and Learning in 21st Century

Dr. Masood Jawaid who was the other invited guest speaker at the IUMS Annual Research Day talked about Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century. He pointed out that Technologies of the Web 2.0 are changing the ways students connect, interact, and share their lives. Teachers must be proficient in online teaching and learning tools in order to improve their teaching and maximize learning opportunities of their students especially in higher education like medicine.
It really doesn’t take too long to figure out what tools are important to teachers in their professional life and what instructional design could be used in their traditional and virtual classrooms. Fortunately, most of these tools are free and easy to use and can be mastered with little or no help. The key part is to be thinking about the pedagogical aspects and to start creating opportunities for students to use these tools in their learning. Some of the online tools are being used successfully by teachers. Allowing students to use these tools can give them some new and exciting ways of learning and at the same time can provide alternatives for matching activities with different learning styles, he remarked.
Earlier on December 8th, the academic programme stated with recitation from Holy Quran. Later the National Anthem of Iran as well as Pakistan (to show respect to the Guests from Pakistan) were played which was something unique and a fascinating experience. It also showed how much love and respect the people of Iran have for their brothers in Pakistan. This was an innovative thought on the art of Dr. Arash Zahed which deserve to be commended and appreciated.

Interactive Workshop on the Teaches Brand

Dr. Masood Jawaid Assistant Professor of Surgery at Dow International Medical College/Dow University of Health Sciences conducted two workshops for the IUMS Faculty members. The first workshop which he conducted was on Teacher Brand. Its objective was that the participants should be able to list, categorize and describe how to utilize different online tools to market themselves in the professional educational world.
The central figure of the learning process, Dr. Masood Jawaid stated was undoubtedly the teacher. A good teacher defines the educational process, beings it traditional or using modern methodologies and technologies like web 2.0. With the advancement of web portals, teacher portfolios, and other digital means for representing professional productivity, teachers have new strategies for demonstrating their effectiveness.
The interactive discussion focused on personal career management. Personal branding, he said was about the practical arrangements by which a teacher builds his/her own brand which could be used for promotion or “sold” after that to an institution. The new technologies enable the creation, development and management of a ‘teacher brand’ with real and solid competitive chances in educational market. During the workshop an effort was made to explore the construction of a brand and how web present technologies (like LinkedIn, ResearchGate, Academia, Google Scholar, slideshare and other social networks) influence teacher quality for mutual benefit to teachers, schools, and society.

Medical Writing, Medical Editing & Peer Review

This was followed by four presentations by Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid on Basic Principles of Medical Writing, How to Write a Scientific Paper, The qualities of Elite Reviewers and the common mistakes which the Iranian authors make while preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication to the journals. The later was based on the experience which he had with the manuscripts which Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences receives from authors from Iran. The presentations were followed by lively discussion. On December 10th he made another presentation on Islamic Biomedical Ethics and its Comparison with Western Bioethics.

Hands-on workshop on GOOGLE SCHOLAR

On December 10th, Dr. Masood Jawaid conducted another workshop which was on Google Scholar. The objective of this workshop was to teach the participants to describe different utilities and functions of Google scholar, perform effectively advance features of Google Scholar, search free text of paid scientific research, create and update their Google Profile and create and update /edit citation and search alerts
He pointed out that Google is a search engine used to find journal articles, conference papers, dissertations and other scholarly sources. No one can deny that Google Scholar is a powerful tool for researchers—but we all have experienced that at times it is difficult to find out the information we want and one does not know the best source. He then demonstrated advanced search techniques for navigating Google Scholar more effectively and efficiently. Participants were informed how to use Google Scholar to find out citation of any paper, directly import citations into Endnote or other citation management system even if publisher don’t provide this service. One can also find full text articles which are otherwise available after payment.
The participants were helped to create Google Scholar personal profile with citation metrics and how to customize it. Creating citation and publication alerts as well as specific search alerts to automatically update about their research interests from the scientific world was also highlighted. Live demonstration of ‘Publish or Perish’ software which is powered by Google Scholar was also included in the workshop.

Training course on Medical Journal Publishing

The last academic activity at IUMS by the visitors from Pakistan was a Training Course on Medical Journal Publishing conducted by Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid Secretary General of EMAME. It was attended by twenty six editors and editorial staff members of biomedical journals published by IUMS. Specially prepared Training Manuals/Exercise Books were provided to the course participants who actively participated in the deliberations. Some of the specific problems which the Editors in Iran face were highlighted by the participants and an effort was made to come up with effective intervention strategies.
Later Dr. Masood Jawaid visited the Department of Medical Education at IUMS. The faculty members and the staff in the department were very keen and they discussed with him various e learning modules, how they can be prepared and used in teaching. He practically demonstrated to them various options and even helped them to do it themselves so that they learn these techniques. They also expressed their keen desire for continued cooperation and collaboration in the field of academics in the days to come. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to the visitors from Pakistan Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid and Dr. Masood Jawaid to have social networking, renew old friendship and make new friends. The hospitality extended by the IUMS was commendable and there was a keen desire for collaboration between the medical institutions and healthcare professionals between Iran and Pakistan, learning from each others experience which could be of mutual benefit.
