Some of the beggars, Dr. Gohar Wajid remarked are very good communicators. It is a fact not a joke, he added. He then emphasized the importance of listening skills. One has to teach higher level of thinking to the students. Objects of leaders are different today than it was in 70s and 80s. Stretch the mind of the students which is done during the lectures. Listening with empathy has to be taught. He then referred to the situational leadership, Transactional leadership, Transformational leadership besides value based leadership.

Dr. Saifullah Sial then discussed different leadership styles. Autocratic leadership style has little input from others while Democratic style takes input from others. In autocratic leadership one has absolute control, it is easy to make quick decisions, and one can maintain order and discipline. Bureaucratic leadership follows set procedures known as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). There are no chances of exploring new ideas, ways. It is slow paced. It ensures adherence to the ladders stated by the institution. It is an efficient management style in companies which does not require much creativity. For example in Pakistan Army there is a chain of command which has to be respected. There cannot be any creative ideas and these seldom reaches to the top.

Charismatic leadership has charisma. It attracts followers through charm. These leaders are skilled communicators, have deep emotional level. In this most often there is over reliance on the leaders. It does have some negative attributes like disarticulation of goals and lack of clarity. In Democratic leadership, there is a team decision. After thorough discussion the leader takes the final decision. It is a sign of strength and employees, members like it. It fits in almost every situation. It offers solution to complex problems. It offers creative environment with the result that it is possible to build strong team. He then referred to Laissez or Faire leadership which has no authority. Transactional leadership, Dr. Sial said motivates the subordinates, offers reversal, pays attention to devotion to subordinates. It offers rewards and punishment. At times different situations require different types of leadership.

In management control, there can be an autocratic style, paternalistic style, participatory style, delegation style. One of the studies, Dr. Gohar Wajid said showed that physician run hospitals had 25% higher quality score than hospitals run by professional manages. When the leadership quality in healthcare professionals are weak, then bureaucrats come in. Leadership training for the healthcare professionals is not included in the PM&DC proposed curriculum. Transformational leadership is the best followed by transactional leadership. LAISSEZ style had the lowest score.
