Otsuka awareness campaign against Hepatitis

Failure to control Hepatitis will be another
major disaster - Dr. Arshad Ali

KARACHI: In spite of various initiatives and campaigns Hepatitis is increasing very rapidly in Pakistan and our failure to control it will make it an epidemic from endemic diseases. Reuse of syringes, pricking of I.V Infusion bottle and needle stick injuries are very common practices and major cause of hepatitis spread in Pakistan. Repeated awareness messages with some incentives could be affective for prevention of hepatitis spread. Special attention should be given to educate the people involved in anesthetic preparation, nursing staff, paramedics and the OT technicians besides doctors. This was stated by Dr. Arshad Ali, Associate Professor of Paediatrics at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital Karachi while performing Otsuka Lucky draw held at Otsuka Head Office here on December 23, 2014.

Dr. Arshad further said that Roadside Dentist, Barbers, ear and nose piercing are other sources of Hepatitis spread.  Prevention is the most important factor which will only be achieved if we create awareness and educate public regarding preventive measures which are very simple to adopt. Awareness is the best option to control hepatitis spread and for this we have to change the attitude of healthcare providers. Print and electronic media can play an important role in this regard.  Media should also highlight the positive steps being taken instead of being critical all the time.

Continuing Dr. Arshad said that we are not allowed to write trade name of the product while we prescribe a drug for patients. It deprives the patients from quality product and on the other hand helps the chemists to play with the pockets of the patients.  He commended the efforts being made by Otsuka Pakistan to educate the healthcare professionals and public.

Mr. Habib Navaid, Senior Director Marketing Otsuka Pakistan stated that it is our mission to enhance safety of the patients, provide quality health care products while working efficiently towards customer satisfaction. It also needs to involve whole society to take part and play their role in this noble cause, he added.

Earlier Mr. Moinuddin Product Manager Otsuka Pakistan highlighted the activities of Savior’s Club. This continuing educational campaign, he stated, is being run to create awareness regarding hepatitis and to encourage ethical medical practices. Print and electronic media is being used to convey the message bedsides seminars and lectures are being organized in various hospitals. Dr. Raj Kuma from Sandeep Clinic Jacobabad was the lucky winner for the month of December 2014 draw.
