KARACHI: College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan has been honoured by the Socrates Committee of Europe Business Assembly with its prestigious award-“the Best Regional Enterprise in education sphere”. The Award was presented to Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry President of CPSP at the award ceremony at Oxford Summit of Leaders of Science and Education which, according to him is considered as Europe’s largest general science and education meeting. This is an annual forum of investors, academics, universities, colleges and schools heads. The meeting held at Oxford UK from December 16-19th 2013 was largely attended.
Talking to Pulse International Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry said that twenty three institutions were selected by the Socrates Committee out of three hundred nominations for the Award. There were awards for best campus, best scientist, best innovative project, best leader, best academic website, best education text book, best university motto, Education Excellence and Innovation, best university library etc. CPSP got the Best Camps award.
Earlier President CPSP also attended the Global Forum on Human Resources for Health at Brazil from November 10-13th 2013. The theme of this meeting was “Human Resources for Health- foundation for universal health coverage and the post 2015 development agenda.” The contributions of CPSP and its remarkable development and progress were highly appreciated by the organizers.
According to President CPSP the college was at present undertaking lot of development work at various regional centers in the country. We are not in competition with any institution in Pakistan and our overseas centers at Nepal, and Saudi Arabia have also made tremendous progress. We will soon be holding two weeks MHPE courses at Jeddah from January 16th 2014. We have so far sent over three hundred Fellows on post fellowship training for three months to Saudi Arabia which provided them an opportunity to work at sate of the art healthcare facilities sharing their knowledge and experience besides earning handsome remuneration and all of them have returned back to Pakistan. They are seen off from here by CPSP, are received by Saudi Health Authorities and at the end of their visit, they are bid farewell by Saudi authorities and this whole system is constantly being monitored, he remarked. When his attention was drawn towards the fact that there appears to be some lack of cohesion within the council on certain issues and criticism about the frequent visits of a few councilors abroad, he said that facts speak for itself. When we came in 2007 the CPSP had just a little over twenty one million rupees but now it has increased over 1500%. Our income from student’s fees is just about 50% while the rest of the funding has been generated by us by undertaking various projects overseas. ”It is not possible to please everyone but we are determined that no financial or intellectual corruption will be tolerated in CPSP at any cost” he remarked. A number of other issues faced by the CPSP also come under discussion and Prof. Zafar Ullah Chaudhry gave his point of view saying that he has to uphold rules and regulations and cannot think of deviating from that but we are always receptive to suggestions and welcome constructive criticism, he added.
