Medical Physicists organize themselves to enhance their professional capabilities

KARACHI: Medical Physicists of Pakistan have organized themselves under the banner of Pakistan Organization of Medical Physicists (POMP) to enhance their professional capabilities. In collaboration with American Association of Medical Physicists (AAPM) they organized a three day training course at JPMC Karachi from January 5-7, 2018 which was very well attended. The faculty included eight eminent medical physicists from USA and Canada. The theme of the meeting was Current Trends of Technologies in Medical Physics, Cancer Imaging and Treatment”.

Most trauma cases are predictable, preventable and curable with simple measures, integrated approach-Prof. Saeed Minhas

KARACHI: A large number of trauma cases in Paksitan are predictable, preventable, easily manageable and curable by adopting simple measures and integrated approach. We do not need to build high rise buildings to house Trauma Centers but we must concentrate on prevention and training the human resource. This was stated by Prof. Saeed Minhas, Prof. of Orthopaedic Surgery at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and a trainer in Trauma Care. He was speaking at the symposium on Emergency Medicine and Trauma Management organized by Ziaudidn University on January 13th, 2018.

Editors without training is just like Flight without wings

Dr. Maqbool H Jafary training scholarship is a great initiative especially in a developing country where opportunities and resources are limited. Journalology and medical journalism has been recognized as disciplines in the technologically advanced countries where education and training courses has already been designed and implemented to produce excellent human resource in these fields. A person may be a good physician or a great surgeon but not necessarily a good researcher or editor. This is the main idea that is working behind the conception and design of training courses for the editors.

Prevention of Diabetes Mellitus Type-2 and related metabolic disorders

Recently the Baqai Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (BIDE) has published its ‘Survey Report’ revealing that the incidence of diabetes-mellitus type2 in Pakistan the rise above the age of 20 has risen to 26% of its population-that is one in every fourth person is suffering from diabetes-mellitus-an alarming finding. About 19.05 percent are known diabetic while 7.14 percent are newly diagnosed and the diabetic prevalence of Pre-diabetes was seen as high as 14.47 percent- the rise has occurred within short period.

All Healthcare professionals including Paramedics should be targeted to create awareness against Hepatitis-Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Khan

KARACHI: During the last few years incidence of pricking if IV Infusion bottle has declined in urban areas due to awareness programmes. However, Paramedical staff which is the backbone of health delivery system, also needs to be educated to avoid unethical practices. Doctors in urban and rural areas should be targeted separately to create awareness against Hepatitis looking at their practice habits. These views were expressed by Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Khan, Associate Professor of Surgery at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Karachi while performing the Otsuka lucky draw held at Otsuka Head Office on 24th January, 2018.

Proceedings of 5th National Headache Update: IHS Visiting Professors' Program organized by PHS

ISLAMABAD: Headache is one of the most common disorders worldwide. On the World Health Organization's ranking of causes of disability, this would bring headache disorders into the 10 most disabling conditions for the two genders, and into the five most disabling for women. The prevalence of headache disorders in Pakistan is high, and would be at least on par with that reported in other parts of the world, although a recent epidemiological survey suggests that the prevalence of migraines could be as high as 22%, almost twice that noted in the international literature.

Speakers pay rich tributes to late Prof. Tahir Saeed Haroon for his contributions to dermatology

KARACHI: Department of Dermatology at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre organized a condolence meeting for late Prof. Tahir Saeed Haroon on January 13, 2018 which was very well attended by dermatologists from various medical institutions in the city. Various speakers expressed their feelings and paid rich tributes to Prof.Tahir Saeed Haroon who established the department of dermatology and  served here as Head of the Department for many years before shifting to Lahore and joining King Edward Medical College from where he later retired as Head of the Department.
