APPS UK Members eager to work
as volunteers in Pakistan if security
concerns are addressed - Dr. Iqbal

LONDON: The Association of Pakistani Physicians and Surgeons (APPS UK) hosted its Annual Gala Dinner in London recently. This event was attended by over 500 guests and some of the distinguished guests who attended the dinner included Dr Asif Rehman, President APPNA (Association of Physicians of Pakistani Decent of North America) from New York; Lord Tariq Ahmed, British Government Minister; H.E. Syed Ibne Abbas, Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK; Dr Fehmida Mirza, Ex-Speaker Pakistan National Assembly; Mr Ted Hill, Chief Executive British Polio Fellowship and Lord Dr Shaukat Khan, Honorary Ambassador of Muslim Sultanate of Philippines. The event was also attended by chairs and representatives of different alumni bodies of medical colleges in Pakistan and Medical Universities in the UK.

Dr Iqbal, Chair, APPS UK in his statement said that APPS UK Members from the UK are eager to work as volunteers in Pakistan to help fight various diseases, but the deteriorating security situation prevented them from entering Pakistan. He also said that Pakistan was losing out on a great deal and could become the beneficiary of expertise from some of the best trained doctors in the west, but these doctors would require assurance that their lives would not be endangered.

Dr Abdul Hafeez, Founder and Executive Director of APPS UK said that we salute the courage of polio workers who are continuing their work despite dangers to their lives. This just proves the resilience of our nation. We will overcome all the hurdles and defeat this menace from our country.

Pakistan’s High Commissioner in the UK, His Excellency Syed Ibne Abbas, praised the work of the association and promised full support of his office to facilitate its projects in Pakistan. A MOU was signed by Dr Asif Rehman, President Association of Physicians of Pakistani Decent of North America (APPNA) and Dr Mohammed Iqbal, Chair of Association of Pakistani Physicians and Surgeons of the UK. This historic MOU will serve as a milestone towards future collaborative work between the two associations.

APPS UK Excellence Awards

The Excellence Award winners for the year 2014 are as under:

1. APPS UK Physician of the Year: Dr Iqbal Malik, Cardiologist, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London.
2. APPS UK Surgeon of the Year: Mr Shahid Siddique, Consultant Neurosurgeon, University Hospitals of Coventry
    and Warwickshire.
3. APPS UK GP of the Year: Dr Tahir Mehmood, Luton, Bedfordshire.
4. APPS UK Allied Health Professional of the Year: Dr Riaz Siddiqui, Senior Rehab Audiologist
5. APPS UK Award for Voluntary Services: Dr Kaukab Rajput, Consultant Audio-vestibular Physician,
    Great Ormond Street Hospital, London.

Dr. Qazi Zaman who is an Endocrinologist from Birmingham and Chair of Khyber Medical College Alumni was appointed as the new Chair of APPS UK while Dr Taimur Mirza who is an Anaesthetist from Manchester was appointed as the new President of APPS UK.(PR)
