KARACHI: Neurospinal and Cancer Care Institute (NCCI) a project of M.Hashim Memorial Trust organized its 4th International Pakistan Gamma Knife & X-Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery Symposium at Karachi from November 26-27, 2016. It was very well attended by Neurologists and clinical oncologist from all over the country besides speakers from Italy, China and Japan. Prof. Ahmed Ali Shah was the chief guest in the inaugural session. Prof. A. Sattar Hashim welcomed the guests.

Dr. Azhar Rashid Radiation Oncologist at NCCI giving introduction to Stereotactic Radiosurgery and indications said that this new technique is very well known, there is more improvement   now and people from different specialties are referring the patients and accepting this technique which is improving day by day. Dr. M. Abid  Saleem, Neurosurgeon at NCCI presented the Gamma Knife radiosurgery experience at NCCI. There is continuous  advancement  in this multi-modality technique. Icon Gama Knife radio surgery, he said, is best way of treatment with more than 86.5% success rate.

Dr. Ehsan Bari from Aga Khan University talked about Evolution of Gamma Knife Radiosurgery. Gamma Knife surgery, he pointed out is today complete treatment method used Worldwide. More than three hundred fifty thousand patients have been treated over forty thousand annually with clinically proven outcome. More than two hundred systems installed Worldwide. It help in improvement of life, it is non invasive, save cost and enhances the quality of life. It is Tailor made surgical procedure offers automatic treatment and supervised reductivity. There is increasing demand from patients and great awareness from medical community, he added.

Dr. Gagliardi Filippo from Italy delivered a talk on Supratentorial pathologies, focalizing on seller & Supra   seller lesions adenoma. Gamma Knife & X-Knife Stereotactic Radio surgery, he stated, is highly precise and  focused  delivery of  reduction to  biological targets on a single session. It is a multimodal and most advised therapeutic approach treatment now days.

Dr. Peng Li from China talking about Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Cavernous hemangioma said that is a rare disease which represents 3% of all benign Cavernous stress tumors. Thirty two patients were treated   during March 2009 to December 2015, thirty patients received single treatment two Patients had fractionated treatment one for twice and one for third time. All patients were followed up   and total control was achieved in 19 patients and found remarkable tumor shrinkage   with 6 to 12 months therapy. High dose may result in better tumor control and Gamma Knife might be effective and safe option for Cavernous hemangioma management, he concluded.

Dr.  Michele Bailo from Italy talked about Infratentorial lessions focalizing on vestibular schwannoma, primary and secondary treatment with gamma knife. Dr. Motohiro Hayashi from Japan discussed the modern and future in Gamma Knife surgery. Dr. Athar Inam from Aga Khan University highlighted the role of Neurosurgeon in Radiosurgery. Role of radiosurgery in high grade glioma was discussed by Dr. Asghar H. Asghar from Kiran Hospital.  Dr. Wang Wei from China shared his experience about stereotactic & functional neurosurgery at West China Hospital. Dr. Yang also from China talked about Gamma Knife   radio surgery for trigeminal neuralgia.
