Workshop on Medical Writing
at Rawlakot, Azad Kashmir

RAWLAKOT (AZAD KASHMIR): Health Research Advisory Board (Health RAB) in collaboration with Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) organized a workshop on Medical Writing at Rawlakot in Azad Kashmir on October 31st 2017. Mr. Shaukat Ali Jawaid Chief Editor Pakistan Journal of Medical Sciences who is also Secretary of Eastern Mediterranean Association of Medical Editors (EMAME) was the facilitator.

During this interactive workshop which was attended by thirty six faculty members from Rawlakot Medical College including some consultants from local Combined Military Hospital, basic principles of medical writing were discussed in detail followed by lively discussion. This was followed by another presentation by the facilitator on How to Write a Scientific Paper. He discussed in detail the importance of reading Instructions for authors in the journal to which one wishes to submit the paper, structure of structured abstract. He also highlighted what information has to be included in different sections of the manuscript i.e. Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion. How to do literature search, how to select a topic, role of the statistician particularly in determining the sample size for the study and interpretation of data, Ethics Committee/IRB approval of the study, Registration of Trials, plagiarism, scientific misconduct were also discussed in detail. He also cautioned the participants from being trapped by Predatory Journals and Predatory Publishers. Do not go for short cut, plan the study and one should have enough time to complete it. It is quite likely that authors may be asked to revise and rewrite it which should be discourage them but they should try to improve it in the light of reviewer’s comments.

Different data collection tools, interpretation of the data, making sure to ensure complete submission of manuscript with all the required documents were also discussed. They were told that if they carefully read and follow the instructions to authors of the journal to which they are submitting the manuscript, it will minimize trauma to their manuscripts and improve chances of its acceptance and publication.

Earlier Dr. Karim Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at Combined Military Hospital who was the local host and organizer welcomed the participants and also thanked the facilitator to come to Rawlakot for this academic activity. He also thanked PharmEvo for arranging this workshop. Dr. Farooq from PIMA who is in-charge of CME activities also addressed the participants, briefly discussed how to plan and conduct a study. Earlier Mr. Asher Naveed Business Unit Head in PharmEvo thanked the participants and assured them that they will keep on organizing such academic activities in future as well.
