Pakistan’s second senior most neurosurgeon after Prof. O. V. Jooma, Prof,and Bashir died in December 2014 of acute myocardial infarction. Prof. Bashir was born at Jallandher (India) in 1934, did M.B.B.S from K.E. Medical Collage, Lahore in 1957. Afterwards he proceeded to UK and got his training in Newcastle upon Tyne from a famous neurosurgeon Prof. Rowbathom and passed F.R.C.S in 1964. When he expressed his wish to come back, Prof. Lt. Col.Najib Khan Principal of Nishtar Medical College Multan sent him an appointment letter. He came back to Pakistan and joined as Asstt.Prof of neurosurgery at Nishtar Medical Collage Multan. Later on he was transferred to Lahore and also got promoted as Professor at King Edward Medical College, Lahore. He established department of neurosurgery first at Nishtar Medical College Hospital Multan and later at Lahore General Hospital in 1986, where he had all the latest equipment and instruments, facilities for neurosurgery and neurosciences. He trained many outstanding neurosurgeons of Pakistan.

He is reported to be the first one in the subcontinent who performed stereotactic surgery for Parkinson’s disease. He was the founding member of the society of neurosurgeons of Pakistan.He presented over forty scientific papers in national and international conferences. He served as the President of Middle East Society of Neurosurgeons,visiting professor Benghazi University in Libya,member of Senate Punjab University, Lahore. He was honoured with President’s Pride of Performance Award in 2000. He was one of few medical men in Pakistan who reached up to the Grade 22 in their professional service. He served as the Principle of King Edward Medical College Lahore from 1989 to 1993, and retired in 1993, He was a very humble person whom the God Almighty has gifted with many qualities of heart and mind. He was a courageous surgeon.  After his retirement, he got affiliated with Ittefaq Hospital Lahore. He has two sons and two daughters, all happily married.
