KARACHI: Afzaal Memorial Thalassemia Foundation (AMTF) is serving the community since 2003 by providing blood transfusion facilities and now it has established in full fledged facility providing sub specialty clinical services under one roof. All patients are treated free of cost with the concept that our patients are our guests. AMTF is planning to establish National Hematology Centre for treatment of patients with Blood disorders including facilities for stem cell transplant with the help of philanthropists and efforts are being made to acquire land for this facility. These views were expressed by Dr. Asim Qidwai CEO and Founder of AMTF while addressing a press conference at Karachi Press Club on the occasion of 10 years celebration of AMTF. Mr. Zubair Motiwala and Mr. Ateeq Ur Rehman members Advisory Board of AMTF were also present at the occasion.

Giving details of about AMTF Dr. Asim Qidwai said that since 2008, AMTF has focused on concept of multidisciplinary services like Chelation, psychology, nutritional, pediatrics, oncology, ophthalmology, ENT, Orthopedics, Neurology, physician, sinologist, pharmacists etc. because Thalassemia management requires a team approach. We have succeeded to provide all these services under one roof and at present about six hundred thirty children are being treated at AMTF free of cost which also includes free medicines, free meal besides transportation etc. Dr. Qidwai further said that Pakistan’s first 5-bed Thalassemia ICU with ventilator support and centralized HEPA filter system has been established and working round the clock. Four hundred seventy three patients have been treated with 83% success rate. This project was supported by the Government of Japan and now Pakistan’s first Thalassemia Heart Clinic also funded by Japan has also started where Thalassemia patients are being treated free of cost. AMTF pharmacy comprises professionals taking care of all patients suffering with blood disorders, he added.
During the last ten years AMTF, Dr. Qidwai informed has examined fifty thousand patients in OPD, sixteen thousand were provided blood transfusions and over one hundred thousand tests were performed and over one hundred thirty million rupees were spent with the help of philanthropists. All accounts of AMTF are being audited annually. Arrangement has also being made at AMTF for counseling and psychotherapy of parents and relatives of the patients by qualified Psychologists. Treatment of Blood Disorders Dr. Qidwai stated is very expensive and we are not able to register more patients due to financial constraints. We look forward to the participation of the community and request them to come forward and support the cause to build the National Hematology Centre which is essential to cater the need of patients suffering with blood disorders. About forty to fifty crore rupees are required to complete first phase of this project, he added.
Dr. Asim Qidwai further informed that about six thousand Thalassemic children are added in Pakistan every year and these could only be controlled by pre marriage Thalassemia screening and avoiding inter family marriages. He urged the print and electronic media to create awareness about this noble cause.
