BIDE celebrates 200th scientific publication
to showcase its research output
It is the only Diabetic Center in Pakistan
providing most comprehensive Diabetes Care
and having a full-fledged Research Department

KARACHI: Baqai Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology of Baqai Medical University headed by Prof. Abdul Basit an eminent Diabetologist celebrated the 200th publication of its scientific research work last week. A formal cake cutting ceremony was held at the BIDE campus on July 29th where Prof. Abdul Basit Director BIDE was the chief guest. BIDE, it may be mentioned here is the only diabetes center in the country which provides most comprehensive diabetes care to the patients and it also has a Research Department which was established in 1999. It is headed by a full time researcher Prof. Ashar Fawwad who is also on the faculty of BMU. It has many honorary research consultants, research officers, statistician and a research coordinator.

Eighty six out of these two hundred scientific publications were in National Journals while the remaining one hundred fourteen were published in international journals. At present more than fifty studies are on-going in different areas while twenty papers are under publication which shows the strength and contributions of BIDE in research. The first scientific paper from BIDE entitled Diabetic ulcer, a prospective study was published in Journal of Pakistan Medical Association in 2001 (S.M. Ali, A. Basit, T. Sheikh, S. Mumtaz, M.Z.I. Hydrie J Pak Med Assoc. 2001; 51(2):78-80) while the 200th publication has been in 2020 in Journal of Diabetes & Metabolic Disorders. (Basit A, Sabir S, Riaz M, Fawwad A, NDSP Members. In the year 2016-17, Second National Diabetes Survey of Pakistan (NDSP) 2016-2017 was done in all four provinces of Pakistan. This led to a joint collaboration of Ministry of National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination, Pakistan Health Research Council, Diabetic Association of Pakistan and Baqai Institute of Diabetology and Endocrinology, Baqai Medical University, to conduct the second NDSP. Seventeen teaching hospitals and/or diabetes centers participated in the second NDSP 2016-2017.

Based on the research publications, BIDE present the derivation and validation of a risk prediction algorithm for assessing the risk of developing Type-2 DM amongst Pakistani population by the name of RAPID (Risk Assessment of Pakistani individuals for diabetes). This scoring system is based on variables that are readily available to people without needing laboratory tests and physician interpretation thereby making it cost effective for national screening programmes at primary care level.
