LAHORE: COVID19 Pandemic like everything else has also affected the working of various healthcare facilities and medical institutions. Public Hospitals and those run and managed by various Trusts and Foundations which remain the last hope for millions of people suffering from various diseases were faced with a dilemma regarding continuation of their services. Most of the public hospitals closed their OPDs for many weeks or started to cater to only Emergency cases which must have come as a great shock to the poor who cannot afford healthcare in the private sector. However, even in these circumstances, there are some Trust Hospitals who never closed their doors and kept on entertaining the patients even under extremely difficult circumstances by taking all the precautions to ensure safety of healthcare professionals as well as ensuring patient safety. Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital affiliated with the Lahore Medical and Dental College is one of those institutions which deserve to be commended.

According to information received, since March 19th 2020 when lockdown was announced in the country till July 15th, two thousand three hundred major surgeries have been performed. GTTH which has one of the best, state of the Art Orthopedics, Spinal Surgery Unit has also trained a large number of postgraduates so far who are now serving all over the country. The well-equipped and adequately staffed, this unit is working under the supervision of Prof. Amir Aziz, a well-known Orthopedics Surgeon of the country who having established his credibility attracts lot of donations, funding’s from philanthropists from all over Pakistan as well as overseas. This helps a great deal the poor patients who can ill afford the expensive implants. GTTH, it may be mentioned here has also installed a most expensive machine worth 2.5 million US dollars for treating cancer in early stages through radiation. It is absolutely free for the poor. The other center providing this facility is Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Center at Karachi.

According to reports, the surgical team starts their work daily with the recitation of Quranic prayer which translated says “In the name of Allah by whose name harm cannot be done by anything in the earth or in heavens. He is All Hearing All Seeing.” It is also reported that “Whoever recites it three times in the morning and in the evening, will not be afflicted by any calamity (Tirmidhi Hadith 3388).

The current COVID19 Pandemic are testing times for the healthcare professionals as well.
