KUNMING (CHINA): Kunming Medical University founded in 1933 in China has taken the initiative to form “South and Southeast Asia Medical Education and Service Alliance” which represents thirty nine medical universities from eleven countries including Pakistan. The objective is to actively engage in collaboration in the field of medical education and health services among these countries. Speaking in the inaugural session of the conference held on July 12th 2019, Li Song President of Kunming Medical University said that it will lead to a regional multilateral cooperation platform and offer a new pattern of cooperation in this field through exchange between medical institutions in China and South and Southeast Asian countries.

Ever since its inception Kunming Medical University, Li Song said has developed into a provincial key university integrating medical education, scientific research and health services for the last eighty six years.

Pakistan was represented at the conference by Prof. Javed Akram Vice Chancellor University of Health Sciences who proposed to host the next conference of this Alliance in Pakistan. He was also one of the speakers in the plenary session. Other speakers included Prof. Shah Guoquiang Chairman of the Institutions Alliance who is also Dean of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and Prof. Li Song President of Kunming Medical University.

The scientific programme of the conference included Keynote lectures by leaders from all the participating countries. Prof.Hu Yiqun talked about the Core Role of Curriculum and Teachers in Medical Education, Prof. Ali Song discussed the Development of internationalization of education through exchange and mutual learning, Prof. Thanya Suhhgabrabandhuy Vice President Mahidol University Thailand discussed the opportunities and challenges in higher medical education was facing.

Prof. Md. Sharfuddin Ahmed from BSMMU Bangladesh made a presentation on the opportunities and challenges of higher medical education, Prof. Wang Yaogang‘s presentation was on Vigorously expand cooperation in healthcare in South and Southeast Asia. Prof. Javed Akram Vice Chancellor University of Health Sciences Lahore from Pakistan spoke on “Scientific innovation and Transformation of scientific and technological achievements in the background of international collaboration. Prof. Deng Jingling from Hashing University of Science and Technology spoke on Forge Ahead Together, Benefit People’s Health Globally.

The topics which were discussed in the next Thematic Session including Education in Health Sciences in Cambodia by Prof. Saphonn Vonthanak from UHS Cambodia, President of UHS Leo talked about opportunities and challenges in higher medical education. Others who spoke on the same topic and shared their views included Prof. Pham Minh Khuu from Haiphong University of Medicine and Pharmacy Vietnam.

In the next session the topics which came under discussion by various speakers included Exploration and practices of High Quality Healthcare Service System by Dr. Mei Neni Sitaresmi from Indonesia, Comfort in medical treatment by Prof. Wang Kunhua from Kunming Medical University, Prospects of digital cooperation on regional health care by Prof. Puttisak Puttawibul from Thailand, Challenges, scaling up of health professions education in South Asian countries by Dr. Jagadish Agrawal from Nepal.

The conference was attended by Vice Chancellors, Deans, and Presidents of universities of participating countries which included Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Vietnam, Lao DRP, Myanmar, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Philippines besides China. Twenty medical universities from China are associated with this initiative including Kunming University which had hosted and organized this conference. The permanent secretariat of the alliance will be at Kunming Medical University. The Charter of the Alliance includes Talent Cultivation, Faculty Team Building, strengthening the exchange and cooperation in the field of scientific research social services and students exchange programme between member countries.
