and Outpatient Services

Endowment fund will be established for sustainability

KARACHI: National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) the mother institution of cardiology in Pakistan continues to set new trends in tertiary cardiac care in public sector. Earlier starting round the clock primary angioplasty to patients suffering from acute myocardial infarction, it announced offering free Pace Maker implantation facility to patient’s with Bradycardia and Heart Block last month. Now in collaboration with Government of Sindh, NICVD has achieved yet another major milestone in the history of Cardiac Healthcare in Pakistan by starting totally free of cost service for all General Inpatients and Outpatients with effect from July 18, 2017 which consists of 95% patients being received at NICVD. Professor Nadeem Qamar, Executive Director, NICVD gave details of this new facility at a press conference he addressed at the NICVD on July 25, 2017. He was accompanied by Prof. Fazale Rabbi, Prof. Nadeem Rizvi and Dr. Najma Patel. Provision of state-of-the-art cardiac services to the people of Sindh is our mission Prof. Nadeem Qamar stated and to maintain sustainability of these initiatives, an endowment fund will be started besides help from national and international donors.

Continuing Prof. Nadeem Qamar said that NICVD has always been striving hard to serve the nation in the shape of providing best services with quality care. NICVD has taken tremendous step by free of cost services for the patients of general category. Getting good health services in Pakistan has always been an expensive idea but NICVD is offering inspirational and premium quality services to common man without any charges. The services provided free of cost includes Emergency Room visit, general ward admission, diagnostic angiography, primary and elective coronary angioplasty, echocardiography, TEE, stress echography, ETT, thallium scan, ECG, X-Ray, laboratory test especially cardiac enzymes, pacemakers, life-saving devices (ICD and CRT-P/D, adult and pediatric surgeries and medicines. It is a great achievement and God has been very kind and we have done what we had in mind when I took charge of this premier institute, he remarked.

During the period May 2016 to April 2017 three Billion rupees have been spent on providing these services as per details which appear in the accompanying Table.

 

Prof. Nadem Qamar further stated that Satellite centers have been planned in the interior of Sindh to provide interventional cardiology services to the people of the province at their doorstep. Our first satellite center at Larkana has started functioning and performed more than one hundred angioplasties. Few more satellite centers will be established at Tando Muhammad Khan, Sukkur and Sehwan in 2017; and at Nawabshah, Khairpur and in Mirpur Khas in 2018. NICVD has also launched outreach Chest Pain Units at different locations of Karachi, so far four such units have been established and three more units will be established in near future. NICVD has now emerged as the world`s largest center for Primary Angioplasty (PCI) and through this program a record number of 9,415 patients in almost two and a half years have been benefited. Moreover free pacemaker (TPM/PPM) implantation, free life saving devices (ICD/ CRT-P/D) implantation and free TAVI programs have also started.

Giving further details of the expansion in services Prof. Nadeem Qamar said that we have renovated all operation theatres. We have two CCU’s, 2nd Thalium machine has been installed besides 18 ventilators in CCU and seven in emergency room. Eighth Cath Lab will start functioning soon. The Sindh government has increased our grant to Rs. 4 billion from Rs. 1.8 billion helping us provide all the services including costly surgeries, medical tests and placement of life-saving devices free of cost. Timings of the OPD services had been extended till 5pm and number of doctors and Nurses had been increased.

NICVD will have seven new hospitals and it will be World’s best cardiac care facility. To overcome the human resource problem, we have adopted Prof. Adibul Hasan Rizvi’s concept to train our people and we have one hundred FCPS fellowship trainee, 24 in Cath lab and eight in Pediatric cardiology, Prof. Nadeem Qamar added.
