LAHORE: World Association for Psychosocial Rehabilitation (WAPR) Third Asia Pacific Conference being held at Lahore from November 1-4th 2013 offers interesting scientific programme. The conference is being held in collaboration with Pakistan Psychiatric Research Centre Fountain House Lahore and Psychiatry Dept. of SIMS Lahore. It is being sponsored and supported by World Psychiatric Association, World Association for Social Psychiatry, World Federation for Mental Health, Pacific Rim College of Psychiatrists, South Asian Forum on Mental Health and Psychiatry besides British Pakistani Psychiatrists Association. The meeting is expected to attract a large number of mental health experts from overseas and Pakistan. Invited speakers from sixteen countries which include Austria, Australia, Bangladesh, India, Malaysia, Palestine, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, UK and USA have confirmed their participation. Recent advances in rehabilitation and biological and social psychiatry is the theme of the conference.
The conference will be formally inaugurated on November 1st in the evening with the inaugural lecture by Prof.Norman Sartorius from Switzerland who will talk about Future of Psychiatry. There will be two plenary sessions on developing psychiatric services in Pakistan. Other salient features include Young Psychiatrists session on career in psychiatry and future perspective- a conversation with Prof. Norman Sartorius, special teaching and training course for GPS and Family Physicians. There will be three special session on Terrorism and political violence: psychiatric and psycho social understanding, Ethics and Mental Health besides Human Rights and mental health. Five workshops planned during the conference include Child and Adolescent psychiatry, Rehabilitation outcomes, setting up Rehabilitation services in low income countries, Personal recovery in psychiatric illnesses and Forensic Psychiatry. In all there will be twenty two scientific sessions wherein more than forty speakers will make their presentations on different topics.
Workshop on personal recovery and psychiatric illnesses will be facilitated by Brig. Mowadat Rana while Anjum Bashir from UK, Ms.Amna Tariq, Dr. Faria Khan from UK, and Dr. Shermin Imran from UK will be the speakers in the child psychiatry session. There will be a special session on Ethics and Mental Ethics which will be held on November 3rd and the speakers include Prof. S. Haroon Ahmad, Mr.Shaukat Ali Jawaid, Dr. Shujat Naqvi and Dr. Asma Hamyun. The topics which will be discussed in this session includes ethical issues in practice of psychiatry- in the absence of mental health laws, National Bioethics Committee Guidelines on Physicians interaction with Pharma Industry, Ethics in Practice of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology and Teaching of Medical Ethics.
Special session on Developing Child Psychiatric Services in Pakistan will be held on November 1st which will be facilitated by Dr.Anjum Bashir from UK. The speakers in this session include Prof.Farid Minhas, Dr.Ayesha Fareed and Dr. Nazish Imran. Dr. Unaiza Niaz, Prof.Razaur Rahman and Prof. Imran Ijaz Haider will be the speakers in the session devoted to developing psychiatric services in Pakistan. Prof. Khalid Mufti and Dr.Feriha Peracha will be the speakers in the special session on Terrorism and Political Violence scheduled to be held on November 2nd in the afternoon. Forensic Psychiatry workshop will be held at King Edward Medical University on November 4th and the speakers include Prof.Aftab Asif and Prof.A.K.Kala from India. A scientific meeting of the Indo Pak Punjab Psychiatric Society will also be held at Fountain House on November 4th 2013. Other special sessions include Updates in Social Psychiatry and Rehabilitation Psychiatry and Teaching Session on mental health in primary care. WAPR Board meeting will be held on November 3rd in the evening.
