KARACHI: In today’s materialistic world provision of quality healthcare absolutely free is a miracle and it has happened and become a reality in Pakistan in the shape of Indus Hospital. Thanks to the dedication and motivation of Prof. Abdul Bari Khan Chief Executive Officer, Dr.Zafar Zaidi and their team who not only conceived this idea but also realized their dream. Established in 2007, Indus Hospital which is located in Korangi area of Karachi has so far treated 1.48 million patients providing 2.9 billion of state of the art healthcares to patients visiting this hospital. Medical and other hospital staff working here performs their duties with a missionary zeal and they are carefully selected keeping in view the mission of this hospital which is equipped with state of the art equipment and instruments. It is fully computerized and functions in a paperless environment. This at present 150-bed facility is spread over twenty acres of land and attracts over fifteen hundred patients daily in its various departments including Family Medicine Clinic and Consultant Clinics.
Generous donations from philanthropists have made their task a bit easy but the hospital needs constant help and assistance to complete the further development work besides expanding the services available. It is envisaged that eventually it will become a 1500 plus bed facility including a university to train the future generations. In a country where quality healthcare has become a luxury afforded only by the affluent class, Indus Hospital continues to serve the poor and remains a beacon of hope for Pakistanis.

According to an information brochure issued by the hospital, they have so far performed 6,336 cardiac surgeries, 11,978 orthopaedic surgery procedures, 6,094 general surgery for adult patients and 3,736 general surgeries for paediatric patients. Similarly in the field of urology 5,483 surgical procedures have been performed in adults and 1,634 in paediatric patients. Over two thousand two hundred ENT surgeries, 1,542 cataract surgeries, 1,750 endoscopy procedures, 1,526 lithotripsy procedures and 36,484 dialysis sessions have been completed so far. The hospital has excellent diagnostic facilities in laboratories and radiology department which also has facilities of ultrasound. Lab tests performed so far are 1,462,966, number of X-rays performed are 261,978, ultrasound 69,777 besides 69,777 non-invasive cardiac, ECG, ETT and Echo procedures.
